Injury update - Scheesel crash

On Tuesday after being discharged from Rotenburg Hospital and returning to Landshut I decided to speak to my local doctor to organise further specialist check-ups on any possible injuries.

Originally on Sunday after the crash I was firstly told by the doctors that I had one broken vertebrae and two squashed vertebrae in my back, a broken right arm (with no confirmation whether an operation was needed or not) and concussion. The following day after further check-ups I was told I had no broken or squashed vertebrae.

After arriving back in Landshut on Tuesday night I made arrangements to see my local doctor the following day, where I was referred to specialists at a Landshut Hospital. On Wednesday I saw an Arm specialist where I was told my arm wasn’t broken and due to having swelling and discomfort in my thumb on my left Hand (this was not diagnosed in Rotenburg) was asked to return on Thursday to see a Hand specialist.
It has now been confirmed that I have a broken thumb on my left hand which will need an operation within the next week to insert a K-Wire fixation. At the same time on Thursday, my right arm was looked at again and now after the 3rd consultation they think there is a slight break, this does not need an operation and an arm support is recommended.

Due to the diagnoses changing repeatedly my parents and I chose not to give any official injury update until we were certain what they actually were. This was to prevent any false information being circulated in the media.

How long it will be until I can race again is unclear at the moment. This is a tough pill to swallow as I believe I could realistically achieve a place in the top 5 of the World Championship. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their well wishes, it is very much appreciated. I will update you as soon as I know whether my season will continue this year or not.

Short update

Daniel is being discharged from hospital this afternoon and will be flying to Munich from Bremen. Graham drove back home yesterday as we didn't know how long he needed to stay in and flying is the quickest and best option. Many thanks to Sandra Jan Bestmann for picking him up from the hospital and taking him to the Airport ♥️.

(Norbert Ockenga article in the Internet where he has written Daniel has had an operation is not correct, maybe ask the rider or his family first)

Unfortunately, Daniel will not be taking part in the European Final this weekend in Aduard and will be having further medical checks locally before any decisions are made regarding the rest of the race season.

Many thanks for your kind wishes, it has been very much appreciated. 🥰

After Daniel's crash today in Scheesel at the Longtrack World championship I am writing to avoid any speculation which unfortunately seems to happen. Daniel was taken to hospital after his crash. He has some injuries but not as bad as first thought. He will be kept in hospital overnight under observation and tomorrow he will be looked at again by the Doctors to establish the next step. We will give an update in a few days, once we know more.

We raced at a very different grasstrack in Hertingen yesterday. A new experience for myself which turned out better than expected. I had some better and some worse heats, but overall I‘m happy with how I performed.

The previous weeks grasstracking have been kind to me😅 I‘ve managed to move further in the right direction. Nevertheless, I cannot wait to get racing on a sandtrack again next weekend😌 See you in Scheeßel✊🏻

Bad Hersfeld ✅

Crashes have never been something that affected me mentally in the past, and I think my results so far this season show that I‘ve come back motivated, prepared and especially mentally ready for the challenge. But coming back yesterday to the track where my first GP season was ended early by a crash through no fault of my own was a different challenge. It wasn‘t something I thought would phase me, but honestly it did.

My nerves were high. There was the conscious thought of confidence — knowing I’m a very good racer and trusting my ability — but also the subconscious thought of not wanting to end up caught up in someone else’s mistake again.

A lot of work has gone into understanding how my mind works and learning how to navigate difficult situations, and that definitely helped me a lot throughout the evening.

There were a few moments where I could have done more. For example, in my third heat I had won the start before the gearbox jumped into neutral, which cost me a better result.

Nevertheless, I’m happy with the result and, more importantly, proud of how I handled the evening. Being able to push through everything, trust myself and race similar to the way I have all season at this particular track was a weight coming off my shoulders.

Back to work 🏁

Our first win in the International class🥇

On Sunday in Schwarme we finally won our first meeting in the International class. After two seasons followed by big injuries and a bit of tough luck in a few meetings along the way, where we came close, in Schwarme everything finally came into place. With two heat wins and a third place after getting filled in and my blow-goggles being empty when wanting to pass for second, it was enough to win the meeting as the last preliminary heat and the final were cancelled due to unfortunate weather conditions.
Ideally of course we would have loved to win by going the full length.
I know this is one of many wins still to come. This just shows hard work and determination does pay off.
Thank you to my entire team and all my supporters for sticking by me through the highs and the lows.
Still so far to go, but we are getting closer day by day📈

Saturday we raced in Werlte. As always it was a great event, but just not my day whatsoever.

We had issues with one of my bikes, meaning I had to head into the first heat on a bike I hadn‘t ridden so far this season. I misjudged a few things, made the wrong setup decision for the 2nd heat, but started moving in the right direction again for the last heat.
I‘ve learnt a few more things regarding set-ups when racing grasstracks and will be working hard in Melsungen and Bad Hersfeld to regain my pre-crash pace I had on these smaller grasstracks.
