I’ve always been fascinated by biographies of athletes and people who push the limits of what seems possible.
I’ve just finished Beyond Possible by Nimsdai, and I’m now starting Never Finished by David Goggins.
I loved Beyond Possible. It gave me a fascinating glimpse into the world of high-altitude mountaineering and the extraordinary determination behind it.
But it also made me think about something very clearly: I love challenges, but I don’t want to play with death.
I admire what Nimsdai accomplished enormously, especially the many occasions on which he put himself at risk to save others. And I admire the way he inspired people to challenge themselves.
But climbing an 8,000er, Everest, or all Seven Summits is not something I aspire to. Not only because of the commercialization of these achievements, but because of the level of risk involved.
For me, there is a difference between calculated risk and gambling with your life.
I want to push my limits. Run farther. Climb higher. Explore more. Learn new things. Do things that scare me a little.
But if the odds of not coming back are 1 in 100, that’s not a challenge I’m interested in.
There are enough ways in life to discover what you’re capable of without putting everything on the line.
That, for me, is the real meaning of Beyond Possible:
Challenge yourself. Push your limits. But know where your limits are.
Now, let’s see what David Goggins has to say about never being finished… 📖
