“How do I get my hips to move like that?” This is probably the MOST common question I get from instructors! People want to have more fluidity in their hip movements, and don’t understand what hinders them! To be honest, most of this is mental, but there are some practical tips that can help you get more from your hips!
1. CHANGE YOUR MINDSET: I hear so often “I can’t.” Henry Ford said, “Whether you think you can or whether you think you can’t, you’re right.” If you don’t believe you can do something you never will! Change your mindset, and change your confession to, “I haven’t gotten it YET.” Or, “I’m still working on it.” Don’t defeat yourself before you begin!
2. LOVE YOUR BODY: I see so many people when they dance play small, move small, hold their limbs close and tight because they are ashamed of one thing or another. I’ve heard it all...these flaps under my arms, this belly, I don’t have any curves, I have too many curves, my thighs are too big...there are a million things that we don’t like about ourselves, and they inhibit us from being truly free on the dance floor. We feel someone else might see these things and judge us. From my experience, this is almost NEVER true, others usually think way more highly of us than we do ourselves! But even if it is true...so what?!?! Who cares what other people think? What others think about me, is actually none of my business! You be free!
3. PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE: Watch other’s who move their hips well VERY closely! What are they doing with their bodies? Are the on the balls of their feet? Are they really moving their hips, or is the motion actually coming from the moving of the legs, bending of the knees? (Those are rhetorical questions-the answer is yes) Practice at home simply making circles with your hips, in all directions, making figure 8’s with your hips, pretend you are drawing a circle on the wall with your b***y (just make sure no one is around to see😂) all of these exercises will help you to get more fluidity in your hips!
“It’s in the reach of my arms, the span of my hips, the stride of my step, the curl of my lips. I’m a woman phenomenally. Phenomenal woman, that’s me.” Maya Angelou❤️
