At the absolute heart of this historic triumph is the City Mayor of Kumba and Team President, Gregory Mewanu. When "Greg" assumed the mantle of leadership, he did not merely promise clean streets, sanitised markets, and modern infrastructure; he made a solemn vow to resurrect Kumba’s long-lost footballing heritage. For thirty years, the city’s footballing prestige had lain dormant, reduced to a fading memory of a bygone era. The night of 31st January 2026 will be etched into the annals of the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) not merely as a date on the calendar, but as the moment the Kumba Chapter reclaimed its soul. Before a distinguished assembly of roughly two hundred media practitioners, drawn from no fewer than eight chapters across the national territory, the Kumba Chapter stood under the spotlight to receive a laurel of distinction—an award for the comprehensive rebranding and revitalisation of an institution that had, for too long, wandered in a professional wilderness.

To understand the magnitude of this achievement, one must appreciate the historical weight it carries. For years, the Kumba Chapter was a beacon of excellence, steered by the steady hands of giants. We recall with profound nostalgia the "Golden Eras" of the legendary Churchill Samba of blessed memory, the administrative rigour of the Shengang-led executive, and the formidable intellectual tandem of Larry Esong and Nyambot Divine. Those were the days when Kumba set the pace for professional fraternity.

However, the subsequent years saw the chapter descend into a dark interregnum. A venomous wind of hate, factionalism, and xenophobic aggression swept through our ranks, tearing the fabric of our togetherness and leaving the media corps in a state of splintered discord. The "City of Kumba" journalists, once a united phalanx, became a cautionary tale of division.

But as the adage goes, the darkest hour is just before the dawn. In early 2025, a new dispensation emerged. The Nzai-led executive did not merely take office; they took responsibility. They found the "magic gear" that had been missing for a decade. Through a nuanced strategy of inclusivity, they began to mend the broken fences, reaching out even to former leaders to ensure that no institutional memory was lost.

The transformation has been nothing short of spectacular. The resurgence of statutory meetings, the hosting of high-level professional workshops, the glamour and fraternity of the Press Dinner, and the introduction of interactive sessions have restored a sense of pride to every member. The "unison and dynamics" now witnessed in the Kumba Chapter are reminiscent of its most glorious days, yet tempered with a modern sophistication that makes it, once again, truly enviable.

The award received this night is a testament to this architectural reimagining of our identity. Seeing our leaders and key figures recognised in the presence of eight other chapters is a resounding "Vote of Confidence" from the national fraternity. It signals that Kumba has moved from the periphery of discord to the centre of professional excellence.

As we celebrate this trophy, let it be a reminder that unity is not merely a sentiment; it is a professional necessity. The Nzai-led team has provided the blueprint. It is now up to every member to ensure that this flame of solidarity is never again extinguished by the winds of prejudice.

KUMBA, CAMEROON – In a rare and aesthetically pleasing display of camaraderie, the Kumba Chapter of the Cameroon Association of English-Speaking Journalists (CAMASEJ) successfully hosted a maiden Press Dinner on Friday, 16th January 2026. The event, which took place at the prestigious Charvic Complex Hotel along Buea Road, marked a significant milestone for the Fourth Estate in Meme Division.

The soirée brought together over thirty media practitioners, many of whom were accompanied by their spouses, creating an atmosphere that balanced professional gravity with familial warmth. Spearheaded by the Nzaih Bweh-led executive, the initiative served a threefold purpose: to fortify the bonds of unity within the corps, to provide a forum for high-level professional discourse, and to formally usher in the New Year.

This event represents a "first of its kind" for the chapter, achieved through a commendable hybrid funding model consisting of voluntary online contributions from members and supplementary support from the chapter’s treasury.

Gracing the occasion as the Guest of Honour, the Divisional Delegate for Communication Mme K. Slesor—who also serves as the professional adviser to the association—expressed her profound admiration for the initiative. She noted that since assuming office in Meme Division, she had yet to witness such a well-coordinated gathering of media professionals.

"This is a vital opportunity for us to bond and align our visions," she remarked, while pledging her unwavering support for the association’s future endeavours. Furthermore, she conveyed the warm felicitations of the Honourable Minister of Communication to the Kumba press corps, encouraging them to maintain their role as pillars of social stability.

The evening’s intellectual highlight was a robust 45-minute interactive session facilitated by the venerable Larry Esong. A senior journalist, publisher of The Scoop newspaper, and former National Vice President of the association, Mr Esong drew from his vast well of experience to "drill" the attendees on the sacred tenets of journalism ethics.

In a session characterized by frankness and professional rigour, Mr Esong highlighted several practical shortcomings currently observed in the field. He challenged practitioners to elevate their standards, touching on everything from the nuances of professional dress codes to the mastery of the English language. He further emphasized the necessity of unwavering principle, objectivity, and a meticulous command of the various reporting roles that define the craft.

As the formal deliberations concluded, the evening transitioned into a sumptuous open dinner. Against a backdrop of fine wine and spirited conversation, journalists and their partners seized the moment to interact away from the high-pressure environment of the newsroom.

*Kumba's Lionesses: The Unyielding Spirit of Women Journalists in the Face of Adversity*

In the heart of Kumba, a city grappling with the deepening wounds of the Anglophone crisis, a group of unsung heroes quietly carries on the vital work of informing, educating, and holding power to account. These are the female journalists of Kumba, and their resilience in the face of unimaginable challenges deserves our utmost respect and admiration.

The operating environment for journalists in Kumba is already fraught with difficulties. Poor access to information, a consequence of the crisis and a lingering culture of secrecy, makes it difficult to report accurately and comprehensively. But for women journalists, the challenges are compounded by a unique set of obstacles.

They face constant harassment from senior statesmen in high offices who seek to intimidate and silence critical voices. They endure threats from armed men, navigating a landscape where their safety is constantly at risk. They grapple with the very real possibility of attacks and worse, simply for doing their job. And, adding insult to injury, many of these brave women are subjected to poor pay by unscrupulous employers and a general lack of security, making it difficult to sustain themselves and their families.

Despite these daunting obstacles, the female journalists of Kumba refuse to be silenced. They persevere, driven by a commitment to truth, justice, and the well-being of their community. Their courage is a testament to the enduring power of the human spirit and a reminder that even in the darkest of times, the pursuit of truth can prevail.

Today, we salute the bravery of these extraordinary women, both the seniors who have paved the way and the juniors who are just beginning their careers. We celebrate their unwavering commitment to journalism and their unwavering refusal to be intimidated.

Garbages everywhere with it, a serious health crisis for a people that are already wallowing in abnormal poverty. No town from the center South, South West and North West seem to escape this storm.
