When I think about the word resiliency, I picture the human ability to persevere through what might seem an impossible situation to accept. I imagine the courage to persevere through such pain and trauma while not knowing the unsure future. The will to dig deep and keep moving forward while pushing through hurt.
Having experienced personal trauma obliterating my knee/broken leg/nerve damage in 2018 a week before the Olympics, it took a long time to recover...mentally, physically and emotionally. I never doubted for one moment that I wouldnโt be ok, even though I had no idea what the future would hold. The most important thing it taught me however, was the importance of family and loved ones by my side. I absolutely love my job but at the end of the day Iโm most grateful for those that I get to share this journey with.
There are many forms of pain and trauma. I have such love and admiration for how the Shiffrin family has shown resiliency through the loss of Jeff. They have been so brave and shown the importance of family. I canโt imagine the pain theyโve endured but they are a true example of resilience; a perfect picture of sticking together.
Thanks Mikaela Shiffrin for this nomination and for sharing your story. Letโs all keep this flame and movement going in Jeffโs honor through the Jeff Shiffrin Athlete Resiliency Fund which has been created to support athletes perusing their dreams.
