A teacher once told me that you need three kinds of people in your life: a cheerleader, a challenger and a check-in. The cheerleader believes in you no matter what and wants to see you win, they‘re at your side through ups and downs, pick you up when you fall and celebrate with you when you rise. The challenger sees your potential, pushes you towards growth, criticizes or corrects you if needed, but always with the intention to bring the best out in you. The check-in is a friend who deeply cares about you, who you can share your heart with openly, who hears and sees you not for what you achieve, but for who you are. They‘re the ones who tell you: Call me when you get home .

When I look at these pictures from my trip to India this year, I can see all three types present - sometimes combined in one person. The spiritual path is not an easy one to walk at times. It is essential to have a support system in the form of guides, mentors, friends and soul mates that encourage, inspire and if needed gently push you forward - so that you can keep going, keep inquiring, keep learning and keep growing.

Can you recognize who these people are in your own life?

The humble sages, by virtue of true knowledge, see with equal vision (sama darshana) a learned and gentle brāhmaṇa, a cow, an elephant, a dog and an outcast (Bhagavad Gita 5.18).

It may not be so difficult to feel connected to a cute baby animal or someone who shares similar values, it certainly is more challenging once the outer form is not so appealing or when we have opposing views. But sama darshana is a practice and like we can stretch a muscle, we can also gradually stretch our perception and our heart.

For those who still take time to listen for more than 15 seconds…leave a heart or comment if you‘re feeling this.

If you think you have everything under control, try controlling the weather. It’s actually quite obvious that so much is beyond our control, and yet we often think and act as if everything depended on us. In reality, there are really only two things we can control: our intention and our effort. And that is already quite a lot. We can make sure that our intentions and actions align with our values and that we do our best; everything else we must—or are allowed to—let go of.

This is one of the central teachings of the Bhagavad Gita: you have no claim to the fruits of your actions. At first, this may sound sobering, but it is actually very liberating and leads to greater inner balance. It prevents us from becoming overly proud when things go well, or from beating ourselves up when they don’t.

Give your best, let God do the rest.

to go on a retreat means to step back in order to step deeper. it’s a conscious act of pulling back or withdrawal, not to escape the world, but to listen deeply, to step off autopilot, recalibrate and remember what often gets drowned out by every day noise.
when an archer shoots an arrow, he first has to pull back. the more he pulls back and the stronger his focus, the farther and the more precise the shot. similarly, the purpose of a retreat is fulfilled in returning, in giving back, in sharing and living the renewed clarity, gained wisdom and deepened devotion. a retreat could be compared to a deep inhale, the returning into life as the exhale that follows naturally.
