AND WE'RE BACK!!!

The first NT School Sports event of the 2026/2027 school year is almost here! The Aurora Ford Soccer Tournament kicks off September 18 to 20 in Hay River, bringing students from Grades 4 to 12 back together for a weekend of soccer, teamwork and school spirit.

A pretty exciting milestone for school sport in the NWT!!!

We are very happy to officially welcome the Beaufort Delta Divisional Education Council to NT School Sports! With the Beaufort Delta joining us for 2026–27, all NWT school districts are now part of NT School Sports. That means more opportunities to bring students together from across the Northwest Territories through sport, competition, friendship and shared experiences.

Music can play an important role in sport, whether it is helping set the mood before a competition, adding energy to a workout, or simply making movement more enjoyable.

What works is different for everyone. Some athletes prefer something energetic, others something calm, and some prefer no music at all. What is on your sport or workout playlist right now?

Students, what would you do with $500 to make sport and physical activity better for girls and young women in your school?

Applications are now open for the NWT School Sport Association's Youth Engagement Initiative, supported by Canadian Women & Sport! We are offering two $500 grants for student-led projects across the NWT that promote inclusion, leadership, body confidence, or participation in sport and physical activity.

Start a club. Create a mentorship program. Organize an activity. Build a campaign. Tell a story through photography or art. Or bring us an idea we haven't even thought of yet. Your idea. Your project. Your opportunity to make a difference. Students or student teams can apply with the support of a teacher or community mentor.

Applications open: September 1
Deadline: September 30, 2026
Two grants of $500 each
Open to NWT schools, Grades 7–12 preferred

Athletes, this one is for your coaches!!!

Behind every practice, competition, challenge, and breakthrough is a coach who gives their time, shares their knowledge, and believes in their athletes. National Coaches Week is September 14–20, and it is a great opportunity to simply say .

Share a photo, a favourite memory, a few words about what your coach means to you, or nominate a coach for recognition through Sport North. Coach nomination deadline: September 7, 2026

Sometimes a simple thank you means more than we realize. Let’s make sure our NWT coaches know how much they are appreciated!

Athletes: National Coaches Week is Your Chance to Say ! Every athlete has a coach who has encouraged them, challenged them, and believed in them. During National Coaches Week (September 14-20), take a moment to let your coach know how much they mean to you.

There are lots of simple ways to get involved:
Share a thank you message, photo, reel, or story featuring your coach.
Finish the sentence: "Thanks Coach for..." in a short video.
Tag your coach in a social media post using .
Share your favourite lesson or quote your coach has taught you.
Write your coach a handwritten thank you card.
Make a small gift, drawing, or photo collage.
Surprise your coach with a team cheer, banner, or tunnel at practice.
Gather your teammates for a quick thank you huddle before practice.
Bring a treat to share with your team in your coach's honour.

Sport North is also recognizing outstanding coaches throughout National Coaches Week. Help us celebrate the coaches who inspire athletes across the Northwest Territories by submitting a coach for recognition!

Love seeing learning move beyond the classroom and out onto the land! Students at Chief Jimmy Bruneau School spent time exploring traditional plant use and listening to stories about the wolverine. A great example of connecting learning, culture, community, and the land.

We love seeing our teachers and school staff getting ready for another school year!

Safe school sport doesn't happen by accident. It takes policies. It takes screening and education. It takes clear expectations and accountability. Most importantly, it takes all of us.

Our new Safe School Sport resource helps students, parents, coaches, officials, volunteers and schools understand some of the safeguards we have in place, including screening, the Rule of Two, our Code of Conduct, training and education, athlete protection, and reporting processes. We also want parents to feel comfortable asking questions. Who is responsible for my child? Have adults been appropriately screened? What happens during travel? How do coaches communicate with students? How do I report something that doesn't feel right?

Ask the questions. Know the safeguards. Speak up. Look out for one another. Safe Sport Starts With All of Us.

School sport should be a place where students feel safe to participate, compete, learn, make mistakes, build friendships and represent their schools and communities with pride.
