Early Detection Saves Lives

1 in 100 people are born with a congenital heart defect.

One of the scariest things about congenital heart disease is that some heart defects can go undetected for years.

You can look healthy. You can feel healthy. You can be active. You can train. You can play sports.

And you can still have something happening inside your heart that you know absolutely nothing about.

That’s exactly why awareness and early detection matter.

Conditions like Bicuspid Aortic Valve (BAV) can be present from birth and may not cause obvious symptoms until later in life. By the time some people finally realize something is wrong, their heart may already be under significant stress.

And here’s something I want more people to understand:

An EKG is not an echocardiogram.

I’ve had a dozen EKGs over the years. An EKG looks at the electrical activity of your heart. An echocardiogram actually allows doctors to see the structure and function of your heart and its valves.

If something doesn’t feel right—unexplained shortness of breath, dizziness, chest discomfort, unusual fatigue, palpitations, or a noticeable change in what your body can handle—don’t just assume you’re getting older or out of shape.

Ask questions. Advocate for yourself. And if there’s reason for concern, ask your doctor whether an echocardiogram or further investigation is appropriate.

Early detection can change the entire course of someone’s life.

Awareness matters.

The older I get, the more I realize peace is a blessing. Thank You, God.

This may be an unpopular opinion… I don’t like barbell Bulgarian split squats.

Not because they’re “bad,” but because I don’t think the risk is worth the reward for most people.

When fatigue hits or your balance goes, getting pinned under a barbell isn’t something I’d choose when there are safer ways to get the same training effect.

Instead, I’d rather see people use dumbbells, kettlebells, or a sandbag.

You can train just as hard, challenge your legs just as effectively, and if something goes wrong, you can safely dump the weight and walk away.

Remember, the goal isn’t to do the hardest-looking exercise. The goal is to build strength consistently while staying injury-free and healthy enough to train again tomorrow.

Train hard. Train smart.

After spending the last year focused on my own recovery, I’m excited to open up my personal training availability again. My own rebuild journey has given me a new perspective on something I already loved doing; helping people rebuild and become stronger, healthier, and more confident.

I’ve got a couple of openings for new personal training clients. So if you’re interested, send me a DM.

Whether your goal is to lose weight, build strength, improve your conditioning, or simply get back into a consistent routine, I’d love to help.

Current availability:

• Monday & Wednesday: 9:00 AM, 10:00 AM or 11:00 AM

• Tuesday & Thursday: 10:00 AM

I’d also be inclined to do one or two sessions on a weekend.

I also have online coaching options available for those who don’t live in Yellowknife, so if you’re not in town but you’re interested or have any questions, send me a message and let’s chat.

For the last 12 months, I’ve been recovering. Today, it’s time to rebuild. Day 1 in the books.

My mindset around REBUILD isn’t about getting back to who I used to be. It’s about becoming stronger because of what I’ve been through.

So, whether life has knocked you down with injury, illness, stress, weight gain, grief, or simply years of putting yourself last, you don’t have to stay there.

You don’t need the perfect time. You don’t need perfect motivation. You just need to take the first step.

That’s what REBUILD 90 is all about.

Rebuild your health. Rebuild your strength. Rebuild your confidence.

“Those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.” — Isaiah 40:31

Recovery changes more than your body. It changes moments.

Moments with your kids.
Moments with your spouse.
Moments you once took for granted.

But here’s what I’ve realized recently… I’m more than my diagnosis.

I’m more than my scar. I’m more than the worst day of my life.

I’m a husband.
I’m a father.
I’m a Christian.

Recovery is part of my story, but it isn’t my identity.

And if you’re recovering from heart disease, cancer, an injury, mental health struggles, or anything else that has changed your life, don’t let it become yours either.

Your diagnosis may explain what you’ve been through. It should never define who you are.

Heart disease doesn’t end when you leave the hospital. For many, the recovery continues long after the scars have healed.

Be kind. Be patient. You never know what someone is carrying.

I thought rebuilding meant getting back to where I was.

I was wrong.

Rebuilding isn’t about becoming who you used to be.

It’s about becoming stronger because of what you’ve been through.

That’s true after surgery.

It’s true after weight gain.

It’s true after injury.

It’s true after loss.

We all have something we’re rebuilding from.
