Our very own Ben & Sarah have been nominated for Citizen of the Year for all the amazing work they’ve done at WORCA over the years.

From clearing trails with their brand manager Garbo, to home-making every single trail day / night meal, these two go above and beyond!

If you happen to be at the Whistler Chamber Awards on October 22 make sure to give them an extra loud cheer for all the amazing work they do for our trails and community.

⚒️ TRAIL CREW UPDATE ⚒️

My Bad! I think?
If you repeat a lie often enough, does it become the truth? For example: On Blackcomb, how did “The Curl” become known as “Lone Pine”?... In 2019, when we redesigned a trail that was impacted by forestry work, I ordered trail sign placards for the new posts. I (think that I) misspelled the name of a trail. I blamed a recent trip to Hawaii and my friendly demeanor for the simple “HI HI” misunderstanding. I was called out for my obvious mistake: “It connects HIGH Side to HIGH Line!”. I promised that new placards would be made in the next sign order (roughly every 2 years!). Changing a single placard was a pretty low priority task, and so the correction worked its way down the to-do list. I’ve recently received another order of placards from Cutting Edge Signs which prompted a cleanup of our signage box… near the bottom, I rediscovered “High High”. After updating trailforks, and replacing the signs, I was re-corrected… “It’s always been Hi Hi!”

“We’ll just take the big horse”- Gary Larson (The Far Side)
Over the last few weeks, the crew has been tinkering away at upgrades to the Farout- Flashback Adaptive-mtb loop. While some bits of trail needed light adjustments to meet the A-mtb standard, others needed a full overhaul to get the required 4 foot of clear tread. For Flashback 2, removing large trees in the already thinned forest and circumnavigating bedrock ridges made a tall task that would have significantly altered the trail’s flavour. On advice from the WORCA trails committee, we opted to bypass the problem areas. The volunteers that helped build Flashback 3, 4 and 5 remember how much effort was needed to make a 4 foot wide trail by hand… so we got the trail crew some slapping shovels, hard rakes and a big horse for a few weeks (mini-excavator). We started by upgrading the Flash 2 midway access point as we regained our bearings on the controls. While widening the tread, we also stretched the turns to alleviate the climbing grade. As we dove into the bypass, the crew needed to adjust how we manage materials compared to digging by hand: Building a berm by hand is usually maxed out by the number and size of rocks we can find and carry… The “big rake” made supersizing and pulling stumps a breeze! We’ll be compacting the brown ribbon when the moisture level is just right so please keep off the soft tread! Meanwhile, the big horse will continue to support the crew, working down Flashback 3 and 4 for more shape enhancements.

See you on the trails!

⚒️ TRAIL CREW UPDATE ⚒️

Done!
I don’t like to let unfinished business go dormant, so this week, the trail crew headed back to the Myrtle Philip Feeder to complete the project that was started by the Arc'teryx convention volunteers. Getting the trail above the high water mark was a bigger task than anticipated. The layers of roots reaching towards the wet spot were endless, so he opted to build the tread up and over with rocks. Lots of rocks! Lucky for us, nearby geological activity and/or Rob Mullen(?) had prepared a generous supply. I’m really stoked with the crew’s craftsmanship on this project! It looked like a proper Scottish-highlands’ flagstone path before capping the tread with dirt. Speaking of unfinished business, we’re stoked to welcome WORCA members to our final volunteer digging event of the season: October 4th on the Marmot Mayhem trail where… we’re about to reach the 1k point! Peak Vending and Coast Mountain Brewing are sponsoring the event. worca.com/events-calendar/trailnight2026oct4

Acquired taste
Following the Witsend/Hillman enduros, the trail crew headed to the “Flashbacks” working down from the Cheakamus lake trailhead. We’ve enhanced drains, smoothed swoops and dug out some gross muck from culverts. More gross still, we worked through a section polluted by an absolutely repulsive smell! Jacob noticed it first: “It smells really bad up ahead, like something dead for sure…” We continued working, tighter as a group through the nauseating zone. Every time I moved up to rake another section, I scanned the woods, because, curiosity! I hoped suffering through the stench would be rewarded with some interesting photos for this trail report, alas, we didn’t find anything. I later spoke to a conservation officer who confirmed our suspicion. He assured me that the carcass was nowhere near the trail and the smell should be gone within a week. I can’t imagine being so hungry, but after this summer’s terrible berry crop, “A Bear’s gotta eat!”

“Old Boss” is in town
It feels serendipitous that shortly after re-blueifying the Lord of the Squirrels exit, Tim Andrews strolled back into town. Now working as the Red Mountain bike park manager, he tells me he’s visiting to check out the UCI World Cup, but I think he’s really here to inspect our trail work. Tim was the WORCA trails director in 2014 when he and (then) president Jerome David selected me to lead the design and construction of the yet unnamed Sproatt descent. In my (job) interview, Tim had asked:” Can you guarantee us that you will build a blue trail?” He’s braving the cold as I type this text to check it out…

See you on the trails!

What a day. We are so thrilled to say that the second annual Hillman was a huge success.

The day wouldn’t have been possible without our dedicated racers, enthusiastic volunteers and supportive sponsors. Events like this take a lot of people behind the scenes, and we’re so lucky to have such a great community showing up to make them happen!

As their second year as Presenting Sponsor, helped make the Hillman possible with their generous cash contribution and a door prize of a two-night stay in their executive suite. kept everyone refreshed with two drinks for everyone, while also contributing a generous cash donation. provided prizing, & hosted us for apres, and provided the podium prizes, an enduro bib giveaway and race tape.

A big thank you to for keeping our volunteers fed, .beer for providing their refreshing non-alcoholic brews, for keeping the bikes maintained with their on-site mechanic station, for the prizing, and Peak Vending for their generous cash contribution.

Huge ups to , , , and RBC for sending our riders and vollies home with rad prizing!

And once again, a special thanks to our Special Events Director, Rachel Chambers (the 🐐), and everyone who helped make the day happen.

⚒️ TRAIL CREW UPDATE ⚒️

Extra Curricular
We held our first Volunteer Trail Day of the fall this week and we were joined by a huge number of kids who’d been stuck behind a desk all week. They had energy to burn (perhaps thanks to Ben’s candy dispensing) and tools hit the ground in a frenzy! The steep hillside made benching more difficult than usual but the team of volunteers managed to get to the mineral soil and support the tread with ample rocks. Thanks go out to for sponsoring the dig! After delicious BBQ’d smokies, the trail crew went back up to tackle some cruxes. We brought back-up too: “Big Rock Rob” was back to dig for another week! Michal, Reilly and Jacob started building an ambitious rock supported berm while Rob and I persuaded the trail through a bedrock spine. WORCA members can join us for the next Marmot Mayhem dig day: On October 4th! Sign up using link in bio! Later in the week, we welcomed some delegates from the corporate conference to dig in the Nester’s zone. After hours of “conferencing”, they were like students at recess, eager to play. The project I selected for them was on the Myrtle Philip Feeder. Bridges there are aging (as wood eventually does) and Western Red Cedar in the area is scarce. So, we’ve opted for the longer lasting solution: Move the trail to higher ground. The wet nature of the area made for some advanced digging. There were bits of “gold” but it was mostly organic matter as we worked close to the high water line. We removed the worst segments of the bridge and the trail crew will be returning to that site before the snow flies to complete this segment.

Enduro Week!
This week, we also made some last minute repairs to Flashback 2 and Rock Rabbit before the Witsend/Hillman enduros. A bridge off-ramp was fully rebuilt. With plenty of huge rocks to spare. Rob couldn’t let them sit unused, so we built up a nearby berm as well. We improved some drains, cleared ditches and culverts on top of limbing and pulling Cottonwoods and Alder that were encroaching on the trail line. Congrats to all the racers!

See you on the trails!
