This weekend we did some simple but important housekeeping across the Systems Business Coach® online presence.

We updated our Google Business Profile so it better reflects who we are today, not who we were several years ago. Systems Business Coach now serves both small business owners looking for practical coaching and the professionals and organizations who support them.

We also reviewed our local search visibility, updated our business description, checked categories and services, responded to older Google reviews, and identified inconsistencies across online business listings that can make it harder for Google to understand exactly who we are and what we do.

On Facebook, we refreshed our company bio, categories, services, credentials, links and contact information so the page presents a clearer picture of the business.

Why does this matter?

Because a business can have a great website, excellent programs and years of experience, but if the information across Google, Facebook, directories and search engines is inconsistent or outdated, people may never find it.

"A system is simply the way something happens." That applies to marketing too.

Our goal is to create a clearer path from search → trust → conversation → support.

This is part of a larger effort underway at Systems Business Coach® to strengthen both our inbound and outbound marketing systems, make better use of the technology we already have, and make it easier for small business owners, coaches and organizations to find the right support when they need it.

If you would like an audit of your own online presence send us your company name and city and we'll send you the report, crazy what data you can find now.

In this issue, I’m speaking directly to small business owners who are still standing after pouring everything into their business.

The first five years are tough, and if you are here, you have already done something hard. This article is a practical reset for 2026: less noise, fewer instant fixes, more facts, structure, and systems.

I share a simple approach to strengthen your business one decision at a time, including a “bug list” exercise to spot what is quietly costing you money or damaging your reputation, and a 5-hour weekly commitment to build stability on purpose.

If you want 2026 to feel steadier, this is for you.

Thank you to the Whitecourt Business Support Network for the opportunity to speak at yesterday’s event on Business Growth by Design: The Power of Systems.

I am honoured to have shared how simple, practical systems can reduce stress for owners and strengthen small business sustainability in our communities.

A special thank you to Michelle Jones and her team at Community Futures Yellowhead East for the invitation and for the work you do every day to support local entrepreneurs. It was especially meaningful to see your newly Certified Systems Business Coach®, Ian, in the room, along with your amazing support, Lillian.

We were also joined by KirstenJenner, a seasoned Systems Business Coach® who has been coaching with this method for the past two years. Having her there added even more depth and real world experience to the conversation.

Having the mayor attend underscored how important this work is. When community leaders, economic development teams, and business coaches come together, small business owners are no longer alone in figuring everything out themselves.

This is exactly the kind of collaboration that builds long term small business success.

Steps to mitigate small business failure starts from day one in the planning. Start your business with your eyes wide open. Thank you Brenda Bouw of the The Globe and Mail for taking a closer look at the business ownership through this lens. 🧐

You will hear me talking about the "invisible chaos" caused by the fact that almost half of all small businesses in Canada will fail by year five. At the same time, half of Canadians are employed by those same companies. The results are devastating for our economy, lack of productivity, lack of growth, lack of secure meaningful employment. ( Employment and Social Development Canada)

The issue is we are measuring the wrong thing, we celebrate number of businesses started, number of new jobs and how many loans were given out. Then crickets. And we wonder why at year three most small business owners are completely burned out , broke and hanging on in hopes that someday they will figure out how to successfully run a sustainable business and have a life.

Business owners, reach out if you need help and want to talk about what is possible. While I'm not doing much 1:1 coaching, I'm open to creating a real support group in 2025. Message me if you are intersted, I'll keep you posted. There is a bit of an economic storm brewing, time to really get strategic and have your business house in order.

“Women entrepreneurs have the potential to unlock Canada’s economy,” says Beverlee Rasmussen, a small business expert who works with business owners helping them overcome the myriad challenges of entrepreneurship. “The potential women bring is significant,” says Rasmussen. “However, it's a long way off; currently women only account for 18.6% of small- and medium-sized businesses.”

According to the Government of Canada, “advancing gender equality and women’s participation in the economy could add up to $150 billion in GDP.” A 2023 Forbes magazine article backs up the value female business owners bring to the economy, stating that “female entrepreneurs outperform their male counterparts. Women founders tend to build businesses that generate more revenues, create higher job growth, dream bigger and execute better.”

We invited Beverlee Rasmussen, the author of “Small Business, Big Opportunity,” to join us for a Conversation That Matters about unlocking the potential of women in business.

Small business owners are carrying a heavy burden this holiday season.

The challenges they face are relentless: barely recovering from the postal strike, bracing for the uncertainty of Trump's tariffs, and now adapting to the new GST “holiday” in full swing. All this, on top of the usual stress of running a business during the busiest time of the year.

I had the chance to discuss these pressing issues with CTV News Calgary host Jefferson Humphreys, diving into the toll these obstacles take on small businesses across Canada.

👉 Watch my interview to hear how these challenges are impacting small business owners and why their resilience deserves our recognition and support.
