Your voice doesn’t start at your vocal cords. 🎤🧠

Sometimes when your singing feels stuck, it’s not technique. It’s all the mental noise you’re bringing into the song.

Try this before you sing:

✨ Close your eyes
✨ Take a deep breath
✨ Play the track and silently “sing” the story in your head
✨ Then tell yourself: My voice is unique and grows stronger every day.

Think of it like a quick mental rinse before you sing. 🫧

What you keep telling yourself affects how freely your body and voice respond.

If singing starts to hurt your throat, your voice is begging for a better way.
Try this awareness check: hum right now.
🐝 That gentle buzz should live in your chest or head, not your throat.
If you notice your jaw & throat tense up, let it go instead of forcing it.

But hey, you don’t need to get caught up in semantics. I put together a simple map so you can actually feel how your voice works when it’s happy and free.

Think a great voice is all it takes to be a great singer?

The music pros in my new survey said… not even close. (Survey responses could include multiple themes so totals do not equal 100%)

Swipe through the seven things they actually care about, from your timing and prep, to how you hold the mic and work with the band.

You’re not “too sensitive” if vocal lessons leave you feeling tense and intimidated.
So many singers think their coach has to be a vocal superhero.

They don’t.

Their job isn’t to impress you.

Their job is to help you unlock your voice.

Look for the coach who:
* explains what’s happening in your body
* makes things feel simpler, not more confusing
* walks you into freedom instead of tension

That’s coaching.

Stop shopping for singers. Start looking for teachers.

Stage fright isn’t always about being afraid to get on stage.

For singers, it can be the racing heart. The shallow breath. The tight throat. The dry mouth. The mind that suddenly forgets the words you’ve sung a hundred times.

And then there are the thoughts:

What if I mess up?
What if my voice doesn’t cooperate?
What if I can’t do what I know I can do?

That’s why I think it’s more helpful to look at stage fright as a mind + body response to performing under pressure—not simply a lack of confidence.

When you understand how your stage fright shows up, you can start preparing for it.

Not by trying to guarantee you’ll never feel nervous.

By learning how to soothe the body and prepare the mind so you have more options when those nerves arrive.

I created my free Stage Fright Mind Map: Your Path to Confident Performance to help you see the bigger picture.

🎤 Musicians: What do you wish singers understood?

Calling all guitarists, bassists, drummers, keyboard players, horn players, accompanists, session players and anyone else who’s spent time backing a singer. 😁

I’ve created a quick 3-minute anonymous survey to hear what it’s like from your side of the stage.

What drives you crazy? What do you wish singers understood? And just as importantly, what do the really great singers do that makes playing with them a pleasure?

👉 Take the anonymous survey: https://forms.cloud.microsoft/r/MceXbikESb

No names. No identifying your bandmates. No singer-bashing. Just tell me what you wish singers knew.

You can run scales for years and still never touch your real voice.
Hey, it’s not because you’re not talented!

When your body is tense, your mind is doubting you, and your voice has learned to stay small to feel safe.

Real singing doesn’t start with exercises. It starts with your thoughts, your body, and the emotional truth you’re willing to feel when you open your mouth.

Before your next practice, try the 30-second reset from this reel:
Soft shoulders. Unclenched jaw. Breath in your belly. Then let your next note come from that softer place of acceptance…and notice what changes.

If you want a space where your real voice finally feels safe to show up, check out my resources for singers

Save this for your next practice & send it to a singer who needs this reminder.

Most singers choose coaches based on one thing:
“Can they sing?”

But teaching is a completely different skill.

A great vocal coach should help your brain and body understand what to do — not leave you overwhelmed, dependent, or doubting yourself after every lesson.

The right coach gives you clarity instead of confusion.

What’s the BEST or WORST thing a vocal teacher ever said to you?
