Starting April 1, 2023, Alberta drivers will no longer be required to take the advanced road test to exit the Graduated Driver Licensing (GDL) program. The basic road test will now include some components from the outgoing advanced road tests. To exit the GDL program, drivers must be 18 years old, complete 24 months of probationary driving, and have no suspensions or demerits for the last 12 months. If they took a Class 5 or Class 6 driver training program from a licensed driver training school, they may be eligible to reduce the probationary period by up to six months.

On June 25, 2023, eligible GDL drivers will be automatically upgraded to a non-GDL driver status. They will receive a letter from Transportation and Economic Corridors in July 2023. Drivers who urgently need a non-GDL license for a job can confirm their eligibility at their local registry office. If they are eligible, the registry agent will exchange their GDL license for a non-GDL license free of charge.

Drivers must attend a registry agent to receive their full Class 5 license or receive a letter from the government indicating that they have exited the GDL program. Until then, all GDL restrictions will remain in place. Alberta's Driver's Guides, Commercial Driver's Guide, and Rider's Guide have been updated to reflect these changes.(accessible here: https://www.alberta.ca/driver-guides-overview-and-pdf-versions.aspx)
