Congratulations to Sam Berthiaume who has been selected to attend Hockey Canada’s Hlinka-Gretzky Cup U18 camp this summer!

The MHL rookie all-star put together a season for the ages in Truro as a 16 year old, putting up a 12-4 record in the regular season alongside a 2.29GAA, 0.927SV as well as a pair of shutouts.

In the playoffs, he found a new level with a league best 1.71GAA and 0.947SV adding to an 8-4 record before an injury ended his season.

Sam along with goalie partner Louca Connolly were named the MHL’s top goaltending duo, winning the Young-Knickle Award for the lowest goals against in the league.

Berthiaume is expected to seamlessly make the jump to the QMJHL this fall.

🚨BREAKING🚨

We are very pleased to announce Ryan Falkenham as the new Head Coach of the Truro Bearcats.

Falkenham is going into his third season with the organization, previously an Assistant Coach brought in by Jon Greenwood at the start of the 2024/25 season. Prior to his time with the Bearcats, Falkenham held positions in coaching with the Drummondville Voltigeurs, Dalhousie Tigers, Citadel High School and the South Shore Lumberjacks Junior B club.

“I’m honoured to lead this group and grateful for the trust this organization has placed in me. We’ve built a strong culture here, and with a committed returning core, I’m excited to continue building on last season’s success.” said Falkenham.”

The former Halifax Moosehead captain has a clear understanding of the Bearcats philosophy and combined with his leadership qualities as both a player and a coach makes him the right fit for the Bearcats next chapter.

Ryan’s predecessor, Jon Greenwood had this to say on Falkenham “I’m happy for Ryan. He’s a young but experienced coach who’s more than ready for this opportunity.”

Falkenham is set to take over for Greenwood who will be moving on to the Head Coach of Dalhousie University fresh off of a Metalfab MHL cup championship.

“Ryan Falkenham has earned this opportunity through his hard work, dedication, and the respect he’s built within our organization and throughout our dressing room. Ryan played a key role in helping bring an MHL championship back to Truro, and we believe he is the right person to continue building on the culture and success we’ve established here with the Bearcats. He understands what it means to represent this community, and we’re excited to see him lead our team into the next chapter.” says Team Governor, Dave Higgins.

Ryan’s first big event as Head Coach will be the upcoming MHL Draft in Campbellton at the end of June. He will work with GM Jamie Barbour and the scouting staff to identify targets for drafting and recruiting as they look to defend the MHL championship in the 2026/27 season.

Now that the season has come to a close, we would like to individually honour our 6 graduating players who have aged out of junior hockey. Finally we have our captain #81 Liam Welsh from Halifax, Nova Scotia.

Liam’s rights were acquired via trade prior to the 2023/24 and he stepped in the lineup as an 18 year old after a season with his hometown Halifax Mooseheads.

He had an excellent offensive output as a rookie, putting up 34 points in 28 games, leading to him being called back up to the Mooseheads for the second half of the season.

Liam would return to Truro for his 19 year old season, being named assistant captain. He put up 37 points while showcasing a responsible two way game and being tasked with numerous high leverage situations.

Welsh came back this year with 3 years of junior experience and with his leadership and ability to bring a room together, it was a given that he was named captain. He put up a career high in goals (16), assists (27) and points (43) as he captained the Bearcats to a league championship.

Over his years with the Bearcats, Welsh played nearly 160 games in a Truro uniform tallying 131 points. Another underrated part of Liam’s game was his clutch factor. He had 12 game winning goals in his Bearcats career along with 2 shootout winners.

We wish Liam all the best as he embarks on his next journey with Dalhousie University.

Thank you Liam for your contributions to the Truro Bearcats and town of Truro!

Now that the season has come to a close, we would like to individually honour our 6 graduating players who have aged out of junior hockey. Next up is #10 Julien Roy from Waterloo, Quebec.

Julien Roy’s path to the Bearcats was unconventional to say the least. After initially attending Amherst camp in the 2023-24 season, we signed Julien and he ended up spending 3 full seasons in Truro playing over 160 combined games in a Bearcats uniform.

Roy’s versatility was his big strength, able to play up and down the lineup and in any situation whether that be 5 on 5, PK or slotting in on the powerplay.

A true locker room guy and the embodiment of a team player, Julien’s value was just as big behind the scenes as it was on the ice.

Roy finished his Bearcat career with 41 points in 162 combined games.

Thank you Julien for your contributions to the Truro Bearcats and town of Truro!

Now that the season has come to a close, we would like to individually honour our 6 graduating players who have aged out of junior hockey. Next up is #9 Jake Todd from Beaverbank, Nova Scotia.

We selected Jake 18th overall all the way back in the 2022 draft not knowing if he would ever make his way to Truro. After 2 and a half years and a few playoff runs with the Halifax Mooseheads, Jake would join us prior to last season’s trade deadline.

Jake came in and immediately made an impact, getting to display his offensive talent putting up 23 points in 20 games. His high end vision and awareness a key in his playmaking abilities. Todd was outstanding in our first round series against Amherst, putting up 11 points in 6 games including the 2 goals in a 2-0 series clinching win in game 6. Unfortunately Jake would suffer a leg injury in game 1 of the division final, ending his season.

He would come back healthy at the start of this year and be named assistant captain, a testament to his leadership and competitive drive. Once again, Todd had an outstanding season, leading the Bearcats in scoring with 58 points in 49 games as well as 13 points in 17 games en route to the championship. Not many people are more competitive and want to win as much as Todd and he showcases it in his play. On the biggest stage in the Centennial Cup, he proved he could play with the top players in Canada, leading Truro with 5 points in 5 games.

We wish Jake all the best as he heads to Dalhousie University next season!

Thank you Jake for your contributions to the Truro Bearcats and town of Truro!

Now that the season has come to a close, we would like to individually honour our 6 graduating players who have aged out of junior hockey. Next up is #91 Matthew Bolduc from Val-d’Or, Quebec.

After spending some time with his hometown Val-d’Or Foreurs, Matthew took a chance on us at the start of last season and moved from his home in northern Quebec to join the Bearcats.

From the jump it was evident that Bolduc would be a very valuable piece, not only because of point production but due to his relentless 200 foot game and detail at both ends of the ice.

Unfortunately in his first season, Bolduc dealt with some injury trouble and would only appear in 27 games although he did pick up 26 points in this time. He wasn’t able to play in any playoff games in 2025.

Matthew could have easily headed back home and hung it up after the adversity he faced in his first season with the Bearcats but instead he came back healthy knowing there was unfinished business in Truro.

Bolduc was named assistant captain at the start of this season and he continued to showcase his responsible, two way game. If you needed a defensive zone faceoff win or someone to lock it down with a 1 goal lead late in a game, Matthew was one of the first guys you’d think of. He was able to play in 48 games this year, putting up 25 points as well as 10 points in 17 playoff games. Bolduc finished the postseason strong with 6 points in the final 3 games against Edmundston to win the Metalfab MHL Cup. The unfinished business was complete.

Thank you Matthew for your contributions to the Truro Bearcats and town of Truro!

Now that the season has come to a close, we would like to individually honour our 6 graduating players who have aged out of junior hockey. Next up is #89 Eli Baillargeon from Shefford, Quebec.

Eli joined us at last year’s trade deadline after 137 games with the QMJHL’s Shawinigan Cataractes and made an immediate impact on our roster, showcasing a mix of goal scoring and in your face, hard nosed play. He put up 26 points in 16 games as well as 12 points in 10 playoff games in 2025 en route to the division final.

This past season, Eli took that goal scoring touch to a new level, leading the Bearcats in goals with 30 while still playing his style of game that you love to have on your team but absolutely hate to play against. He also lead the league in PIMs with (only) 160.

While his goal scoring in the postseason took a hit, his play didn’t as he still was nearly a point per game with 4 goals and 10 assists to go along with the Metalfab MHL Cup.

He had a huge goal in the Centennial Cup, scoring what would be the game winner in a 6-1 victory against the Toronto Patriots who were a tournament favorite going in.

Baillargeon took home our MacQuarries 3 Stars Award at our recent banquet for his accumulation of being named one of the three stars in games this season.

We wish Eli all the best as he heads back home to Quebec to play hockey at Universite de Sherbrooke where he will take his post secondary studies while continuing to play high level hockey.

Thank you Eli for your contributions to the Truro Bearcats and town of Truro!
