UPDATE: New York Life announces partnerships to redevelop North Point Mall.

New York Life has announced a partnership with Jamestown and Machete Group to redevelop North Point Mall into a 100-acre sports-anchored entertainment district. The proposed development includes an arena, hotels, retail, public transit access, and residential units, and is overall designed to attract an NHL team to metro Atlanta.

Jamestown, known for Ponce-City Market, has said they will oversee pre-development activities to position the site to attract an NHL team to the metro area. The final plan is expected to come when the rezoning process is complete.

Machete Group will work with Jameson to advise Jamestown on development, utilizing expertise in professional sports arenas to guide the process.

More updates on this project will follow as more information is released.

RECAP: Where an NHL return to Atlanta stands now...

With team USA winning Gold on Sunday, I wanted to recap the current standing of an NHL return to Atlanta.

1. Krause Sports & Entertainment:

The framework for an arena is completed and is essentially ready for a green light from the NHL. My understanding is the group is in contact with the league but has not met recently, likely due to a lack of new developments.

2. Alpharetta Sports & Entertainment:

Redevelopment efforts of North Point Mall are finally off the ground as the city has established a new Tax Allocation District to financially support an NHL-sized arena and surrounding development.

On February 10, Mayor Jim Gilvin hinted at big news in the near future for the mall, saying he is eager to learn which direction New York Life may take the mall. The Life Insurance company had previously stated intentions to build an NHL-sized arena but has not released details since.

3. Where does the NHL stand in this?

When it comes to the league, expansion seems to still be an afterthought. The NHL has not yet publicly stated any intentions to expand or shown favor to one group over another.

This leaves the question of why... is it because the league is content with 32 teams? Are there other plans the league is prioritizing? Or is it something else?

The only thing that is clear right now is the drive of ownership trying to bring a team here. Atlanta hockey fans have never had a team owner this driven to have a team and succeed here. That is worth noting and should not be taken for granted.

UPDATE: The City of Alpharetta has approved a tax allocation district to redevelop North Point Mall.

The approval came through a City Council meeting on Monday as part of the effort to revitalize the mall. Plans for redevelopment include 2,600 housing units, 3M square feet of office space, & a possible hockey arena.

City Council has been looking at this as a means of revitalizing the North Point area while also creating an ability to negotiate for a potential NHL team.

The next step in this process is to secure an investor to lead the redevelopment efforts.

BREAKING: The NHL and NHLPA ratified the new four-year CBA that's set to take effect in the 2026-27 season. This was viewed as the last major hurdle before expansion on the league side. Expect more expansion news before the end of this year.

UPDATE: The NHL provided updates on expansion and the new CBA, Vernon Krause spoke in-depth on his vision for an NHL return to Atlanta.

At the Board of Governors meeting yesterday, Gary Bettman gave updates on expansion, stating that interested parties have been notified what the price is.

In the same day, Vernon Krause spoke with the 100% Hockey podcast at length about his vision for an NHL team, including his background in hockey and business. Here are some of the key points from that podcast:

-Krause’s sole focus is on securing an NHL team. This project is driven by his passion as a hockey fan, dating back to his season tickets with the Thrashers.

-Currently expecting a definitive answer by the end of the year with a planned 2028/29 puckdrop.

-Aims to get UGA, GA Tech, and KSU into NCAA D1 hockey within five years of the 2028/29 season.

-Plans to build 2-3 rinks in addition to the practice facility.

-Krause intends this team to use the Georgia identity in lieu of the previously used Atlanta identity. The idea behind this is that he wants it to be a team the whole state can be proud of, also referring to being told that “Atlanta has failed hockey, but Georgia has not.”

Lastly, in a report by Frank Seravalli, the NHL and NHLPA are expected to announce the framework of a new CBA this Friday, ahead of the NHL Draft. This CBA is the last item before the NHL can proceed with expansion.

In light of recent developments with an NHL-ready arena in the Forsyth/Alpharetta area and in the face of the upcoming NHL Board of Governors meeting, I want to discuss not only how an NHL team here will meet all four criteria for expansion and thrive long-term. To recap the criteria, Commissioner Gary Bettman stated that a potential NHL team would need to have a good market, an arena, good ownership, and would need to improve the standing of the NHL. An NHL team under the model proposed by Krause Sports and Entertainment would meet the criteria with the following package.

1. The group has an 18,500 seat arena designed specifically for NHL games in an area that is accessible to the majority of former Thrashers season ticket holders and current NHL fans. This arena will be surrounded by an additional 90+ acres of mixed-use development with an identical design philosophy the The Battery at Truist Park.

2. The Atlanta metropolitan area is one of the two largest markets in North America without an NHL team. It's home to 6.3 million residents and 38 Fortune 500/1000 companies. Residents within a 12mi radius of the arena already consumes NHL media at a rate 20% above the national average according to a Forsyth County Chamber of Commerce study.

3. Ownership is driven by Vernon Krause, a longtime metro Atlanta resident and passionate hockey fan. Krause's financial background comes from the Krause Auto Group, a top 100 dealership group in the United States. Krause is also backed by a number of unnamed investors. So far, this group has committed roughly $3B on the total project before any NHL expansion fees.

4. An NHL team in metro Atlanta will fill a major hole in the league's portfolio by securing the entirety of the Southeastern US and re-establishing itself in a top 10 metropolitan area. Returning to Atlanta under the current plan will correct previous mistakes made with the Thrashers by involving ownership that's rooted in passion and an interest in long-term success. An Atlanta area team will also increase the league's revenue potential and further reinforce the NHL's credibility and growth-oriented narrative.
