Ruby's Paralympic Journey

Ruby's Paralympic Journey A young Para Swimmer and Global adovacate seeking to raise awareness for other with disabilities and her sport of swimmimg. Dreams of being a Paralympian

I would like to introduce you to Ruby Stevens. She currently holds the AWD-C Level 4 National Championship Title for Synchronized Swimming. For those of you not familiar with this sport this is quite an accomplishment, even more so for someone like Ruby. Her life is complicated by many things including Epilepsy, Asperger’s Syndrome, Anxiety Disorder, ADD and Learning Disorders. Anyone one of thes

e would make life difficult but combined creates chaos, fear and isolation on a daily basis. Over the years she has struggled academically, medically and socially trying very hard to “fit in” with others. Unfortunately for Ruby this proved to be too much and at the age of 10 she had an emotional breakdown that required hospitalization and a year away from school. Luckily we had an ace-in –the-hole…the pool and Variety Village! As soon as she was able we encouraged her to get back in the water. She resisted at first of course, she was tired, depressed and very scared. But as always the water and environment calmed her and helped to believe in herself. It was not a quick process but eventually Ruby returned to school and competition. She will always struggle to some degree. But the lessons and strength she has learned and continues to learn through her sport will only help her to grow more confident as an athlete and a person no matter where life takes her.

History in the making 🙌

The first-ever Canadian Women’s Wheelchair Rugby National Championship is here! 🇨🇦🏉

From April 24–26, 2026, the country’s top female wheelchair rugby athletes will compete in Défi sportif AlterGo in Montreal — marking a major milestone for the growth of women’s wheelchair rugby in Canada.

This inaugural championship is more than just competition — it’s a celebration of the athletes, advocates, and community who have helped build the women’s game from the ground up. And it’s only the beginning.

With the first-ever Women’s World Championship on the horizon this December in Paris, the future of women’s wheelchair rugby has never looked brighter.

Let’s cheer on these incredible athletes and be part of this historic moment 💪
