Ruby's Paralympic Journey

Ruby's Paralympic Journey I would like to introduce you to Ruby Stevens. She currently holds the AWD-C Level 4 National Championship Title for Synchronized Swimming.

A Para Athlete and Global advocate seeking to raise awareness for others with disabilities through sport, movement and a passion for life as she chases her dreams of being a Paralympian For those of you not familiar with this sport this is quite an accomplishment, even more so for someone like Ruby. Her life is complicated by many things including Epilepsy, Asperger’s Syndrome, Anxiety Disorder,

ADD and Learning Disorders. Anyone one of these would make life difficult but combined creates chaos, fear and isolation on a daily basis. Over the years she has struggled academically, medically and socially trying very hard to “fit in” with others. Unfortunately for Ruby this proved to be too much and at the age of 10 she had an emotional breakdown that required hospitalization and a year away from school. Luckily we had an ace-in –the-hole…the pool and Variety Village! As soon as she was able we encouraged her to get back in the water. She resisted at first of course, she was tired, depressed and very scared. But as always the water and environment calmed her and helped to believe in herself. It was not a quick process but eventually Ruby returned to school and competition. She will always struggle to some degree. But the lessons and strength she has learned and continues to learn through her sport will only help her to grow more confident as an athlete and a person no matter where life takes her.

🇨🇦 A HUGE SHOUT OUT TO ALL OF YOU THAT HAVE DONATED AND SHARED 🇨🇦

As training and selection camp grows closer, the Northern Lights invite you to move with us, to motivate us and cheer us on 🤩🥳🤩

🌟 SHOW US YOUR SELFIES, YOUR GROUP PICS, YOUR FAMILY FUN 🌟

Please share your pics with us so we can follow along! See tags how to join below and
LETS HAVE SOME FUN 💜

You don't have to donate to join, but if you care to every little bit helps

✨LIGHTS ON: MOVE WITH US✨

We're inviting our community to move every day, leading up to our Edmonton training camp September 15-20.

MOVE HOWEVER WORKS FOR YOU.
Walk, wheel, roll, stretch, swim, lift, play a sport, dance, or simply get moving in a way that feels right for you. There are no rules about what movement has to look like.

Here's how to join us:

🏐MOVE: Get moving every day until camp.

🏐SHARE: Show us how you're moving and tag Northern Lights - Wheelchair Rugby Canada

🏐DONATE: Help support our journey to the 2026 World Championships in Paris.

🏐INVITE: Challenge your friends, teammates, family, or community to move with you.

While you're moving with us, we'll be putting in the work too. At our upcoming Edmonton camp, we'll track every minute the Northern Lights spend training and share the total with everyone who has joined us along the way.

This isn't about how far you go, how fast you move, or what activity you choose. It's about showing up, moving together, and helping us keep the Lights ON all the way to Paris.

Hello Everyone!
I have been given an amazing opportunity to attend a training and selection camp for the Women's Wheelchair Rugby World Cup IN PARIS! This is not only a huge opportunity for me, but a giant step forward for women in sport! The goal is to increase awareness and inclusivity for women across all sport particularly in historically male dominated arenas.

Any donations are truly appreciated, I understand if you cannot at this time. But please share this post as far and wide as you can so the future will see more incredible women representing Canadian Paralympic Team here at home and on the International Stage

For a glimpse into the life of an elite Para Athlete, check out this article written by a very talented journalist Wency Leung. Rio is Ruby's Paralympic Journey Teammate on the Toronto Titans and a member of Team Canada. He is exceptionally talented, an amazing human being, always there with a kind word and a smile, but Wency gives you a peek behind the curtain into the life of a high performance Para Athlete. I hope you enjoy this as much as I did.

Wheelchair Athlete Rio Kanda Kovac Wants to Win | The Local

His thirst for victory has gotten Team Canada's youngest player this far in wheelchair rugby. But in this fast-paced, aggressive, yet remarkably inclusive sport, getting ahead also means learning to play nice.
