Big Match 2025: Tamil Badminton Championship – Canada vs UK
Toronto, June 21, 2025 — The British Tamil Badminton Federation along with Canadian Organizers proudly hosted its first-ever international Advance Tamil Badminton Team Championship – Canada vs UK, marking a historic milestone in the global Tamil badminton community. Held on Saturday, June 21st, the event showcased an exciting clash of talent, bringing together 40 elite players from the UK and 100 players from Canada, competing across 17 intense event categories.
The tournament was smoothly conducted across two nearby venues—Ignite Sports Badminton and Paragon Badminton Academy—thanks to the tremendous support from both facilities and a large group of dedicated volunteers from various local clubs.
Team Canada delivered a dominant performance, winning 14 of the 17 categories, thereby securing the Championship Title under the official rule that a team winning 9 or more categories earns the crown.
As the host country, Canada had the advantage of fielding a larger number of players, while the visiting UK team faced natural limitations in bringing their full player base due to travel and logistical constraints. Despite this challenge, the UK team competed with heart and displayed great sportsmanship throughout the day.
This landmark event was generously supported by Chennai Caters as the Title Sponsor and New Ranganas Jewellery as the Platinum Sponsor, whose contributions added prestige and scale to the event.
A heartfelt thank you to MP Juanita Nathan for attending the awards ceremony and presenting the awards to the winners.
The celebrations continued in the evening with a Welcome Reception and Gala Dinner at Amana Event Centre, where athletes, supporters, and organizers came together in unity and celebration. A heartfelt thanks goes to Babu Catering for the delicious dinner service, and to Amana Event Centre Management for their full support in hosting the memorable evening.
Special appreciation to DJ Suganthan for creating a vibrant and energetic atmosphere during the gala and to Raj Rajakulanathan, who beautifully captured the day’s special moments through his exceptional photography.
Last but not least, a heartfelt thank you to Mahen Vaheesan and Anthony Jeyakanth—two highly experienced and well-recognized badminton tournament organizers in Toronto—for taking the lead in hosting this maiden international tournament and working tirelessly to make it a tremendous success.
As this was the maiden edition of the international championship, having 40 UK players travel to Canada was a significant achievement and has laid a strong foundation for future tournaments. “This is just the beginning,” organizers said. “We hope more and more countries will join this battle in the coming years.”
Many lessons were learned from this experience, and the organizing team now has a clearer vision and greater confidence to host even larger and more successful tournaments in the future.
The next edition of the tournament will be announced soon, and the international Tamil badminton community is already looking forward to what’s next.
