Avelino Gomez, born in Cuba on Oct. 10, 1928, was one of the most colourful and exciting jockeys to ever race on Canadian racetracks. The man known as “El perfecto” died tragically due to injuries sustained in a racing accident at Woodbine during the 1980 Canadian Oaks. There is a statue of Gomez at Woodbine and he is the namesake of the prestigious Avelino Gomez Memorial Award, inaugurated in 1984. In 1977, he was inducted into the Canadian Horse Racing Hall of Fame, which celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2026.
