“The new funding from the government has had a tremendous impact on the whole industry here, and we are thankful for that," said CTHSOntario president David Anderson.
The son-and-father team of Al and Bill Ulwelling from Minnesota purchased the sale topper, Hip #131, a Mucho Macho Man c**t out of Ghost Painter, for $140,000.
Al said the additional government money made him, “much more active in the sale. The extra purse money added to the big races for the auction horses, the extra breeding incentives, and an actual long-term thought plan will keep us racing there forever. Without that money, we probably would’ve had to look at Kentucky as they seem to be the state that is flourishing with racing.”

By all measures, Wednesday’s (Sept. 2) CTHSOntario Canadian Premier Yearling Sale produced the most successful results in years. Gross, average, median and number of Thoroughbreds sold were all up over last year, and both the gross and average were the highest in at least 10 years.

The auction, held at the Woodbine Sales Pavilion in Toronto, saw 145 yearlings sold (up 8.6 per cent from 133 in 2025) for a total gross of $4.47 million (up 20.5 per cent from $3.638 million last year). That produced an average $30,838 (up 12 per cent from $27,353 in 2025) and median of $17,000 (up 12.5 per cent from $15,000 last year). It was the first time the sale has surpassed $30,000 in average in 10 years and only the second time in a decade it has surpassed $4 million in gross. In 2023, the gross was $4,017,790, but 23 more yearlings were sold that year compared to this year.
