THE ASSOCIATION OF IROQUOIS AND ALLIED INDIANS TO
MAKE OTHERS AWARE OF FALSELY CREATED STATUS CARDS

London, Ontario, September 2026 – The Association of Iroquois and Allied Indians (AIAI) wishes to advise the public of the actions of an individual named William Denby, who has been falsely representing himself as Indigenous and has been creating false status cards. These cards have no official recognition with any First Nation, government, or otherwise and are being presented as such by a group calling itself ‘Kawartha Lakes First Nation’.

“These cards undermine all the work Nations, Indigenous and Non-Indigenous, have been driving toward for reconciliation and recognition.” Says Grand Chief Joel Abram, “Mr. Denby is attempting to assert rights and authority over lands illegitimately, and they hold no legitimate claims whatsoever. The creation of these fraudulent cards does nothing but hinder the real work and claims by real Indigenous Peoples and are an attempt to take hold of something that they are not entitled to.”

“We at AIAI denounce and oppose the words and actions of Mr. Denby. We do not, and call upon others to not, recognize any claims and authority that Mr. Denby and his group perceive to have because it does not exist. His followers are attempting to use these cards for tax exemption purposes and to obtain gas. This should not be allowed; we of AIAI call for him and his group to cease this blatant disregard for our rights and attempts at cultural appropriation for material gain.”

Chief Laurie Carr of Hiawatha First Nation states “ Hiawatha First Nation supports efforts to ensure these activities are properly investigated and addressed. We encourage governments, businesses and the public to exercise caution and not recognize these fraudulent claims or documents. Our Nations have worked too hard to protect our rights, lands, cultures and identities to allow them to be exploited in this manner. “

We ask other First Nations to denounce Mr. Denby and his group, along with all claims, words, and actions they may take, and to support an investigation to stop further harm to all Nations.
