This February, Barnes Management Group proudly celebrates Black History Month 2026, a time to honour and learn from the remarkable contributions of Black communities throughout Canada.

This year’s national theme, “30 Years of Black History Month: Honouring Black Brilliance Across Generations — From Nation Builders to Tomorrow’s Visionaries,” celebrates three decades of recognizing the leadership, creativity and resilience of Black Canadians. It invites us to reflect on the legacy of those who helped shape our history and to celebrate the innovators who continue to inspire our future.

Black Canadians have enriched this country in many ways, not only through community leadership but also through cultural expression, education, and unwavering commitment to justice and equality. Their stories remind us that progress takes courage, vision, and collective effort.

At BMG, we know that meaningful progress begins with inclusion. We strive to create spaces where people feel seen, respected, and supported to succeed. We believe that when diverse voices are welcomed and heard, our workplace and our communities are stronger.

As we honour the achievements of Black individuals and communities this month, we are also reminded of the resilience it takes to overcome obstacles and build lasting change. These stories encourage us to keep listening, learning, and working together.

Hi, I’m Gagan. I create space for people to show up exactly as they are—brave, imperfect, and growing—while gently untangling the wounds they’ve been carrying. No masks. No pressure. Just honesty, compassion, and room to breathe. I hold a Master's in Education and am an intern for my second Master's in Social Work.

I’m a registered social worker in play therapy and a psychotherapist. My work has always been rooted in meeting people where they are. Over the years, I’ve worked across the developmental disability sector, education, homeless outreach, and mental health services, guided by a deep belief that everyone deserves dignity, support, and a path forward.

I’ve served as the housing lead for two major homeless shelters, supporting over 271,000 check-ins from unhoused individuals, and led housing efforts during an encampment in Treaty 6 territory (Edmonton) in temperatures as low as -37°C. My proudest accomplishment was leading 50 housing workers who became a lifeline for thousands.

I’ve also taught for the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, supported individuals navigating DUI-related harm with compassion rather than judgment, and served as Edmonton’s first Senior Diversion Specialist. Beyond direct service, I’ve contributed to systemic change through government initiatives, board leadership, and community-based advocacy.

Outside of work, I’m usually active, with friends and family or cheering on the Edmonton Oilers.

I bring over 20 years of experience in business before making a purposeful pivot into social work, bringing with me strong skills in leadership, relationship-building, and systems thinking. I have held board and governance roles with the Back Door Mission, a low-barrier community hub supporting people who use drugs and individuals experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, social isolation, and mental health challenges. I also served as a school board trustee with the Durham District School Board, contributing to the development of the board’s first comprehensive Indigenous Education and Human Rights policies.

I am a mother and grandmother of mixed settler and Anishinaabe ancestry, currently on a journey of reconnection and reconciliation that informs my practice. Previously, I worked as a Family Service Worker with an Indigenous Child and Family Wellbeing agency, and I currently work as an Addictions Counsellor in a community-based agency, grounding my work in trauma-informed, culturally responsive, and harm-reduction-oriented approaches.

📢 We kicked off 2026 with our first BMG Associates Meeting, and it was a great success!

It was inspiring to see so many of our associates, consultants, and trainers come together from across our network. The session gave us a chance to share important updates, exchange fresh ideas, and learn from one another’s diverse experiences.
These monthly meetings continue to remind us how powerful collaboration can be — every conversation helps us grow stronger as a team and increase our collective impact.

Here’s to more shared learning, innovation, and connection throughout 2026!

Fiona Douglas is a Master of Social Work (MSW) candidate with an Honours BASc in Community and Social Services and a Social Service Worker diploma. For more than ten years, Fiona has focused her work on supporting children, youth, and women, particularly those impacted by gender-based violence and human trafficking.

She has experience working in child and adolescent mental health, frontline advocacy, and program leadership. She has planned and facilitated trainings on sexual exploitation and human trafficking in Canada. Most recently, she moved into Program Management, overseeing six programs, including residential, outreach, case management, and clinical supports.

Fiona has truly enjoyed working in both frontline and management roles, as they allow her to stay grounded in lived experience while contributing to stronger programs, teams, and systems. She has a strong interest in community-based research, policy development, and ethical storytelling that centres lived experience, and is excited to contribute these interests to Barnes Management Group’s work in social development and equity.

Hi, my name is Quinn. I am an MSW student and a social worker at the Southwest Centre for Forensic Mental Health Care, where I provide consultative and clinical services for patients with a dual diagnosis of developmental disability and mental illness. My professional background spans forensic mental health, crisis intervention, homelessness outreach, and research, giving me a broad foundation in both direct service and a narrower experience in systems-level work.

I have particular policy and practice interests in social issues related to adolescents, Indigenous communities, and su***de prevention, with a focus on how structural and systemic factors shape individual outcomes. Beyond my academic and clinical work, I’m learning French, I rock climb, and I like to read. I’m looking forward to working with the team at BMG and learning as much as I can!

🌟 BMG at the Small Business Information Event – Strengthening Connections 🌟

Last week, Barnes Management Group had the privilege of attending a Procurement Assistance Canada - Ontario Region (PAC-OR) event, where PAC-OR, alongside federal and community partners, hosted the Small Business Information session and trade show.

It was a fantastic opportunity to explore the wide range of services offered by the Federal procurement department and to engage directly with key stakeholders in the public and private sectors. The trade show provided an invaluable space to network, share ideas, and explore meaningful collaborations that support small businesses and diverse suppliers.

Team BMG had fruitful conversations, particularly with the Ontario First Nations Economic Developers Association, CGLCC, and the Canadian Black Chamber of Commerce.

🤝 We thank PAC-OR and all the partners for organizing this impactful event!

🇨🇦 Happy Canada Day! 🇨🇦

Today, we celebrate the beauty, diversity, and spirit of our nation. From coast to coast to coast, Canada stands strong, built on the values of inclusion, respect, and shared responsibility.

As we celebrate this day, we also honour the resilience of the communities who have shaped this land, including Indigenous Peoples, newcomers, and generations of Canadians working toward a more just and unified future.

Let’s come together in the true Canadian spirit—stronger, kinder, and more united than ever.

🍁 Happy Canada Day – united in diversity, resilient in spirit. 🍁
