FYI…

As LOWWSF continues work on the Canadian Domestic Phosphorus Management Plan, we’re working to better understand and communicate the story of phosphorus, algae blooms, and changing conditions across the lake.

📸 If you spot an algae bloom, send us a photo along with the general location, date, and photo credit.

Community photos help document what’s happening across this large and complex lake and tell an important part of the water quality story.

a bit of history told…

If you’re into Lake of the Woods history, this is big news! The Aulneau Penninsula was named after Father Aulneau a Jesuit priest from France. Fort Saint Charles began operation in 1732. April 1736 Father Aulneau wrote a letter from his hut within feet of the site where we will be creating the special Aulneau display in the current chapel! My friend, retired professor, David Fuller travelled to France to visit Aulneau’s homeland and the family’s private archives and ancestor who shared this only extant letter written at Fort St. Charles. The letter has a water stain as there were no ziplock or dry bags in 1736. The display will include translations of the letter, photos, and a map of the grounds of the fort showing where Aulneau’s skeleton was discovered. If there are any French speaking people reading this post, feel free to share your thoughts of what these 1700's French words may mean today in the comment section of this post, also Dave Fuller mentioned if anyone would like to ask any questions he can be emailed at [email protected].
