There are more and more incredible young female athletes out there who are giving it their all every single day.
As a coach and trainer, there’s one thing I believe we need to talk about more: how our girls are fueling their bodies.
I see athletes who train hard, push through tough workouts, play multiple sports, go to school, and give everything they have in their sport — but sometimes they aren’t eating enough or don’t know what their bodies actually need.
And fueling an athlete isn’t about dieting.
It’s not about restricting calories.
It’s not about the number on the scale.
It’s about energy, strength, recovery, growth, focus and performance.
Our young athletes need to understand that food is fuel. Their bodies are still growing and developing, and they need enough nourishment throughout the day — not just on game days.
Parents, coaches and trainers all have a role to play in teaching our girls how to properly fuel themselves on and off the field, court, track, ice or wherever their sport takes them.
Because training harder isn’t always the answer.
Sometimes, they simply need to eat, hydrate, recover, and give their bodies what they need to keep going.
Let’s build strong athletes — not just physically, but by teaching them healthy habits that will stay with them long after their playing days are over.
