The Forge WMA: Sydney, NS Chapter Join Cape Breton's only HEMA club, where ages 14+ can experience the thrill of sword fighting in a safe, friendly, and inclusive space.

Beginners always welcome! We're a HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) club based in Sydney, Nova Scotia, focused on both historical and modern martial arts. Our core training is grounded in the German school of fencing—think longsword, messer, and medieval grappling. We also branch out into living traditions like Hungarian Hussar sabre and Irish stick fighting (Shiner Faction shillelagh), alon

g with practical modern combatives such as bare-knuckle boxing and Michael Janich’s CBC/MBC systems for knife defense. Whether you're into historical swordplay or real-world self-defense, our club offers a friendly, inclusive space to train hard, learn deeply, and connect with a like-minded community.

Update: had a good session with Russ discussing body mechanics. Monk’s walk was explained, and his opinions on cutting mechanics in early Liechtenauer vs. Fiore. Very interesting and informative. Also learned how to deliver powerful sabre thrusts without hip rotation, and how to increase strength in the bind. Brain is full. See y’all on Wednesday!
