How can beginners start their fitness journey without feeling overwhelmed?
It’s all good, it’s not your fault, the fitness industry is just noisy. Keep in mind that it is an industry, and most of what we see online about fitness is marketing. That's not a bad thing; it just means there are a lot of competing voices trying to get your attention. But just because it’s noisy out there doesn’t mean working out and watching your diet is complicated.
The basics: simple but not easy. I’ll tell them to you, but you’re going to laugh because you already know
lift heavy stuff
get your heart rate up
get moving, walk, do fun stuff, play
be consistent
Be safe, ease in, and progress slowly
small wins and better habits stacked over time
We love to overcomplicate things; it's fun, and it sounds cool to talk about. There are so many ways to get results; at first, it doesn’t matter, forget about optimal, try stuff, find what you like, and be consistent. Be skeptical of sources that say they have the answer and everyone else is wrong. Or if they say they have a way to bypass time and hard work. Quick and easy sells, trying hard and doing the basics consistently over time do not. There are great coaches out there. Just remember, good information usually sounds kind of boring.
So now what?
Keep it simple and just work out.
do a bit of weights a few times a week
do a bit of cardio a few times a week
walk more
Eat mostly whole foods
Get out and do something fun with your body
ease in and progress over time
Remember that exercise is a signal you send to your body; the more frequent and stronger the signal is, the more your body is urged to adapt to it. Also, remember that your body needs rest. Because it is during that rest that the changes to your body occur. Good luck, you got this! And if your struggling to find the time or energy, remember that something is always better than nothing.
