Anglers who made it out in January enjoyed excellent Winter Chinook fishing, a promising sign for the upcoming season.

On January 21st, DFO shared its preliminary 2025 salmon outlook, showing similar trends to recent years. While Upper Fraser and Skeena stream-type Chinook remain in slow recovery, stocks in the Lower Fraser, Shuswap, East Coast Vancouver Island, Cowichan, and West Coast VI are expected to return at high abundance, offering strong fishing opportunities. Regulations will aim to protect struggling stocks while allowing full limits where possible.

Coho stocks are looking good across the coast, with notable abundance in Georgia Strait. Fraser Pink salmon, in an "on year," should return in high numbers, while Skeena and Alberni Inlet Sockeye are expected to provide great fishing.

Overall, 2025 is shaping up to be an exciting year for BC salmon anglers!

Last week, the International Pacific Halibut Commission (IPHC) met in Vancouver, BC, where the SFI represented BC’s recreational fisheries. Scientific reports showed halibut stocks are declining across the Pacific, with the steepest drops in areas impacted by high bycatch. As a result, the IPHC approved a 15.8% coastwide harvest reduction for 2025, though cuts will vary by region.

For BC, this means a reduction in season length and limits. With a 15.8% cut to Canada’s total allowable catch (TAC), the recreational sector’s quota drops to ~650,000 lbs—the lowest ever, down from 805,679 lbs in 2024. Overages in 2023 and 2024 contributed to this decrease.

The SFAB Halibut Committee is working on recommendations to maximize the season, but with the lowest TAC on record, 2025 will be a challenge. Halibut fishing is currently closed in BC, and we’ll share updates once the management plan is finalized.
