A community-run indoor pickleball facility appears Penticton-bound.

Penticton City Council has approved a temporary-use permit for up to three years that would bring four pickleball courts to 301 Okanagan Ave. East.

Developer Joseph Cuzzocrea said in a letter of intent to council that his team plans to lease the facility to the Okanagan Pickleball Playground, a newly formed non-profit group.

Because the property is in the city’s industrial zone, the applicant needed a temporary-use permit to operate a recreational facility.

Council was unanimous in issuing the permit on Sept. 1.

Cuzzocrea also said there is potential to add two more courts, for a total of six.

The building, expected to serve the more than 250 estimated pickleball players in Penticton, is set to feature washrooms, a viewing area with picnic tables, and close to 30 dedicated on-site parking stalls.

It would also create more capacity for the outdoor Penticton Pickleball Club, which currently has a waitlist for new members.

“We believe the facility will provide significant social benefits to the Penticton community while utilizing a largely vacant warehouse with minimal to no impact to the neighboring properties,” the letter of intent reads.

A portion of the property is a cannabis production facility. Cuzzocrea noted that there will be no impact to the operations, with the existing security gate set to be moved to maintain the cannabis facility as a “completely separate, self-contained and secured facility.”

Cameron Betts, president of the Penticton Industrial Development Association, made no objections to the proposal in a letter submitted to the city on Aug. 26.

“While this activity does not support industrial use, we appreciate the owner’s right to monetize their spaces,” Betts wrote. “We feel this is a great use of the (temporary-use permit) as it allows review of this after three years. Further, we understand the land owner has noted to the user group, there’s no guarantee of long-term use as they may continue to develop industrial uses in the future.”

🎬🏓 qathet Pickleballers Get a Special Shout-Out from The D**k Director!

What a fun and memorable evening!

Members of the qathet Pickleball Association gathered for a special outdoor screening of The D**k, enjoying a night filled with laughter, popcorn, great company, and of course, plenty of pickleball spirit.

The highlight of the evening was a surprise video message from The D**k director Josh Greenbaum, who was delighted to learn that pickleball players in Powell River/qathet had come together for a community screening of his film.

His personal greeting added a unique Hollywood touch and made the night even more special.

We’re excited to share Josh's message with everyone. It's not every day that our local pickleball community receives a direct shout-out from a film director!

A big thank-you to Mitch and Brian for hosting the screening and creating such an incredible outdoor theatre experience. Most of all, thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it a fantastic evening.

The qathet Pickleball Association is incredibly grateful to Deb and everyone who has supported the Bay Leaf fundraiser.

Thanks to this creative community effort, $2,000 has already been raised for the qPA Facility Development Fund ($1,000 from Deb's leaf sales and $1,000 match by an anonymous donor)!

The fundraiser is still going, and every package of fresh, locally grown bay leaves helps bring us one step closer to a dedicated pickleball facility for our growing community.

Something for the council to be aware of - such potential if we had better outdoor courts and indoor playing spaces made for pickleball -
with enough space around the courts.

Victoria’s pickleball boom generates more than $50K in court reservation revenue

Victoria’s new court reservation system has generated more than $50,000 in revenue in less than four months, with the city’s new pickleball hub at Topaz Park accounting for more than half the total.

City of Victoria data provided to CHEK News shows court reservations at municipal pickleball and tennis courts brought in $50,765 between April 1 and July 27.

Of that, $35,015 came from pickleball reservations and $15,750 from tennis.
