MAKE 👏 THE 👏 TASK 👏 EASIER 👏

You don't need to keep trying harder and harder. You've already earned an A+ for effort.

What matters is whether the thing got done, not whether you destroyed yourself to do it. 😅

Making the task easier could look like lowering the bar a little on your expectations of yourself- instead of aiming for perfect, maybe aim for "decent" and "finished."

There is zero shame in taking a shortcut when the point is just to get the thing done!

Productivity is on a pedestal in our culture. It feels like you always need to be making something or providing something.

And if you aren’t always making or producing value for others?

You feel like you’re doing something wrong. But you can’t endlessly produce without refilling your tank.

With ADHD, you’re often extra hard on yourself when your version of productivity looks different from those around you.

Don’t get me wrong: I like making, creating, and producing things, too. But I don’t want to be known for what I can generate.

I’d rather be known for being a whole person. For fun memories and laughter with loved ones. For being interesting, funny, kind. For trying new things and for all the things I love.

What is it that ✨you ✨ want to be known or remembered for?

If you have ADHD and are late-diagnosed, you’re probably all too familiar with feeling stressed, anxious and overwhelmed. You likely also often feel challenged by managing your emotions and crave some easy regulation.

Keeping flowering plants (that are easy to maintain- this is key) around, like these orchids, gives me a little glimmer of joy and helps me decompress.

You’ve heard me say it many times, but research has shown that exposure to nature improves our mood, helps us focus, reduces anxiety, and even lowers blood pressure. Going for a walk is great, but why not add more support by bringing a little greenery inside, too? 🌺

Be honest: what’s your relationship with fun like? 🤔

I’ve noticed a common theme among ADHD women I’ve worked with: we’re constantly trying to keep everything together, and fun and play tend to get put at the bottom of our priority lists.

In our productivity-focused culture, we tend to view fun and play as frivolous and unimportant distractions that get in the way of the "important" stuff.

But I’ll ask you this: what are your favourite, happiest memories to look back on?

I bet many of them involve times when you had fun in some shape or form, and they probably don’t involve checking something off a to-do list.

I believe fun and enjoyment are non-negotiable components of a fulfilling, energized, and happy life! Prioritizing them is one of THE most important forms of self-care.

If you’ve been grinding so hard at getting things done and keeping everything together that you don’t even know what you find fun anymore, try thinking about what your 10-year-old self loved doing most.

Doing this myself and taking action on those activities has been an incredible part of my journey through late diagnosis. 🛼

Many of us have done the work to overcome body shaming and no longer equate our value with how we look.

But what about brain shaming? 🤔

What do you tell yourself about how you compare to people who seem to have it all together? Do you feel like you need to be organized, put together, and on time in an *effortless* way just to be a decent human?

What would happen if you reframed your negative self-critiques as brain shaming? How would it change how you engage with those thoughts?

"Genius" is kind of overrated, in my opinion, but I believe we ALL have our strengths and areas of brilliance. However, if you only use one standard measuring stick to calculate or determine each person's excellence, you'll inevitably miss out on a LOT.

PS- I have no idea if Einstein actually said this quote 🙈 But I still think it's worth sharing.

Until I was diagnosed with ADHD at age 37, I fully believed that my symptoms were just character flaws.

The fact that there was a legitimate explanation for them and that maybe I wasn't just a s**tty person, after all, was truly life-changing.

Sometimes people ask why adults bother seeking a diagnosis after years of life without one. Aside from getting access to medication, what's the point, right?

THIS is the point. Understanding why you are the way you are, what that means, and how you can work with it is the knowledge that everyone with our type of brain deserves.

😳 You know that deer in the headlights feeling!

These days I am much better at staying engaged by keeping my hands busy and with other strategies, but this happened to me far too often before I was diagnosed.
