The Walker Ranch “WE WALK THE WALK” Promoting the NATURAL gait and versatility of The Tennessee Walking Horse.

A gaited breed known for its calm demeaner and its smooth 4 beat gate.

One of the biggest misconceptions in gaited horsemanship is that you must depart the walk to find the gait.

You never depart the walk. You add energy to develop a longer stride.

The walk is the foundation. As energy increases and the stride lengthens, the horse must maintain coordination, balance, and the ability to move its body with dexterity and elasticity.

Rather than pushing the horse out of one gait and into another, we develop its ability to organize its body and manage increased energy without sacrificing the quality of the movement.

A better gait comes from developing the horse’s movement, not from chasing a particular footfall.

What do you do with a horse with happy feet?

You can’t control the energy but you can shape it.

You can’t lunge the energy out of them but you can redirect it.

You can’t use extra equipment to control them but you can soften them by releasing.

Put the horse where you need him to be and release. He’ll meet you there. Remember, you get back what you reinforce.

Your horse will thank you for it 🤠

Every time we share a post about head position, we get pushback. And that’s okay. We welcome discussion. But we have a few questions worth considering.

Do all gaited horses instinctively know where their heads need to be? Is there one correct head position dictated by breed or conformation?

If the answer is yes, then why do we see gag bits, elevator bits, draw reins, martingales, tie-downs, bitting rigs, and endless discussions in gaited-horse forums about how to achieve the perfect headset?

If a horse’s head position is supposed to be a natural result of its conformation and movement, why is so much time, equipment, and effort devoted to controlling it?

Maybe the question we should be asking isn’t where a horse’s head should be, but what we need to develop in the horse so that its head and neck can find a functional position on their own.
