Well this is problematic
Apparently electric school buses are starting to become the “future” across Canada and honestly… I still can’t decide if this is a brilliant long-term investment or just another extremely expensive upgrade that sounds better in theory than reality. 🇨🇦🚌⚡
On one side, people keep pointing out that EV buses cost way less to operate every year. Lower fuel costs, less maintenance, fewer moving parts, quieter rides, and supposedly better for the environment too.
But then you look at the upfront numbers and it gets hard to ignore. A regular diesel school bus might cost around $200,000, while an electric version can be close to $400,000 or more depending on the setup and charging infrastructure. That’s a massive difference before the bus even leaves the parking lot.
And sure, charging times sound slow compared to filling diesel, but realistically those buses sit parked overnight anyway. So maybe the bigger question isn’t charging speed… maybe it’s whether the long-term savings actually outweigh the higher purchase price over time.
I honestly think this debate depends completely on where you live. Cold Canadian winters, route lengths, electricity prices, maintenance costs, government subsidies, and how long school districts keep the buses probably change the math entirely.
Some people think electric buses are the future.
Others think taxpayers are paying way too much for technology that still has a long way to go.
