More Players, More Fun, More Hockey!
Nelson women’s hockey has come a long way. What began as a dedicated group of passionate players — the original Nelson Blueliners — has grown into a vibrant league that continues to build momentum each season.
Over the years, interest in the sport expanded from one travelling team to three local teams playing a rotating schedule. Last season marked a major milestone with the launch of a four-team women’s league, allowing players to hit the ice every week against new opponents.
The 2025–2026 season saw over 100 women participating across three weekly ice times for different skill levels — a powerful sign of how much the sport has grown in our community.
The league brings together women from all walks of life — your local neighbourhood doctors, dentists, nurses, paramedics, teachers, foresters, construction workers, designers, business owners, mothers and daughters — all lacing up their skates and sharing the joy of the game.
Today the Sunday league offers a full game-day experience with referees, a scorekeeper tracking player stats, and great arena energy — all while fostering a supportive and competitive environment for women to play the game they love.
With the league now completing its second season, organizers are excited to continue growing participation and building an even stronger hockey community.
Three cheers to Michelle Ling of Kootenay SmiLing Denture Clinic for her incredibly generous donation of a full set of brand-new hockey jerseys as the league expands.
Community support like this helps make the future of women’s hockey in Nelson even brighter as the league continues to welcome more women to the ice.
