I moved to Indianapolis a few months ago.

5 years ago, very few Haitians considered Indianapolis a viable destination.
Today, it is reported that there are close to 50,000 Haitians in and around Indianapolis.

They have come from Haiti, Latin America, and other parts of the U.S.

Better paying jobs and lower cost of living, among other things, are the main factors attracting them.

Lev who is of Jewish ancestry is part of the Million Peace Maker organization. During this fascinating conversation, they talk about the mechanism and benefits of constructive conflict management. Lev also talks about his experience of conversing with a fellow Palestinian and thanks to his “Nonflict” training, his conclusions were very surprising.

I personally find it hard to set boundaries. I love to help people. I also want to be appreciated and heralded as a “good” person. While this is mainly the result of my values it also springs from my own insecurities and needs for acceptance. A homeless man I have been helping called me the other night and told me he had no place to stay. I felt a strong impulse to invite him to come spend the night in my apartment in Montreal. I knew that doing this would be neglecting my wife’s and my daughter’s own needs for security and safety and would put them in a very uncomfortable situation. It would also be ignoring my need for privacy. I resisted the urge and instead advised him to go to a shelter. I have met with him since, to provide him with clothes, money for food and assistance to find a permanent place to stay. Experts on Boundaries, Dr Henry Cloud and Dr John Townsend say that because of the internet it has become harder than ever to set proper boundaries. “Work can find you at home and you can be connected to someone or something 24/7.” Since the pandemic started, the lines between work and home have become more blurred and many of us are spending most of our time (either physically or virtually) in communication with others. Now, then, is the perfect time to work on setting boundaries or in other words, learning how to balance your needs and the demands others put on you. As you do this, you could develop greater self-awareness (and acceptance) of your own needs, clearer boundaries and all-around healthier relationships.

In 2010, I moved from the U.S. to Quebec with my family. Adapting to a new language and culture was a very hard transition for all of us. And though we did not do it perfectly, practicing active listening made a huge difference. Listening to each other patiently, attentively and without judgement, with the goal of fully understanding rather than offering advice, allowed us to keep our relationships with each other intact as everything else was shifting.

How do you let go when there’s so much at stake? With the reopening of schools, it is nerve-wracking for many parents to send their children to school at such an unprecedented time. It is hard to tell how things will go. My advice is to focus on what you can control: remind your kids to social distance, to wear their masks and to wash their hands. Life is full of challenges. Remember that it is good for our kids to learn this early on.
