I keep threatening to be more active to help spread the word on 'state of the nation' with respect to safeguarding in Western Canada. Well, below is inserted a clip from WSBC's email newsletter (recommend that you get signed up!) with the incidents reported in the early fall of this year. I find the list interesting as some of these hazards are task related on a machine but not direct mechanized hazards from the machine motion.

Be careful at work friends - take a minute to think about the hazards that you face in your work place.

Another unfortunate accident. Remember that lockout is a procedure that protects workers engaged in maintenance activities on machines, it is low on the effectiveness scale of safeguarding controls because it is a procedure. Safeguards protect workers when the machine is in operation. BC OHS Regulation Guideline 12.28 gives some direction in applying complimentary protection around conveyors. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family and co-workers of this young person.
