Wild Islands Seaside Discovery STEAM summer camp series Week 1 (July 6-10) is for the curious thinkers, the experimenters, the “why does this happen?” youth.

In Stewards, campers ages 10-15 dive into:
- discovering ocean creatures & how the marine environment works
- scientific method & experimental design
- building and testing their own experiments

This week builds confidence, independence, and critical thinking - skills they’ll use long after camp ends.

Hosted at Murphy's Camping on the Ocean, in partnership with Eastern Shore Ocean Discovery Centre.

We've been keeping busy!

We had a great time at the Musquodoboit Harbour Farmers Market May 31st alongside Angie with the Eastern Shore Ocean Discovery Centre . We enjoyed chatting with families about summer camp, sharing a few hands-on activities, and connecting with so many wonderful people from the community.

Earlier this month, Thunder was also grateful to volunteer with CLIMAtlantic at the Climate Adaptation Conference, supporting conversations about how communities can respond to a changing climate while building resilience.

While these events may seem quite different, they're connected by something deeply important to us: community. Whether we're facilitating outdoor programs, supporting local organizations, or contributing to broader conversations, we believe stronger communities are built through relationships and collaboration.

This summer, every week brings a new ocean adventure at Wild Islands Seaside Discovery.
More than just a summer camp, Wild Islands Seaside Discovery invites young adventurers to become scientists, conservationists, explorers, and oceanographers through hands-on learning and unforgettable coastal experiences.
Stewards Week
Think like a scientist. Campers will ask bold questions, design experiments, test ideas, and use the scientific method to better understand the natural world around them.
Explorers Week
Become a beach detective. Search the shoreline for clues, investigate tide pools, uncover fascinating intertidal creatures, and discover the natural forces shaping our coast.
Guardians Week
Protect what you love. Campers will explore local habitats, discover incredible marine life, and learn how they can help support biodiversity and protect our coastal ecosystems.
Navigators Week
Chart your course. Investigate tides, waves, wind, and weather while uncovering the powerful ocean processes that shape our beaches and coastal environment.

Strong programs start with strong leadership.

Last weekend, Fin had the opportunity to spend time with camp leaders from the Camping Association of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island reflecting on program design and the impact their decisions have on the camper experience. What stood out most was the intentionality these leaders bring to their work thinking not only about activities and schedules, but about culture, belonging, growth, and the opportunities they create for young people to thrive.

Effective leadership in camp settings is about more than managing operations. It's about setting a vision, empowering staff, responding to challenges, and continuously learning from experience. The willingness of leaders to reflect, ask questions, and adapt is what transforms good programs into meaningful experiences.

One of the examples of program design that they demonstrated was an invitation to take a picture outside of something meaningful to share with the group. Fin's is included on the post, representing the access to water that he shares a passion for in his personal life as well as his professional life.

We are grateful for the thoughtful conversations and the commitment CANSPEI demonstrated over our time together. Their investment in continuous improvement will certainly have a lasting impact on the campers, staff, and communities they serve this summer.

Nature is our teacher and co-facilitator. 🌳⛅🍃

There’s a certain kind of challenge that comes with running an Outdoor Council of Canada course. Long days, blackflies, shifting group needs, unexpected problems, other loud groups nearby, and the constant need to adapt in real time. No matter how much preparation goes into a course, being a leader in the outdoors always has a way of reminding you that flexibility matters just as much as planning.

As an instructor, some of the biggest lessons come from those moments where things don’t go perfectly. When a route changes. When conditions shift. When someone in the group needs more support than expected. Those moments force you to slow down, reassess, communicate clearly, and move forward differently than you originally intended.

That’s part of why outdoor education is so valuable. Challenge builds awareness. Adaptation builds confidence.

The outdoors teaches that constantly: you can’t control every condition, but you can control how you respond to them.

A huge thank you to Hike Nova Scotia for hosting the Field Leader course this past weekend and to all of the participants who showed patience, resilience, humour, teamwork, and a willingness to keep learning through every challenge we faced together. Watching people adapt, support one another, and connect is one of the most rewarding parts of instructing.

Every course is a reminder that resilience isn’t about avoiding difficulty — it’s about learning how to move through it with patience, humility, and adaptability.

Summer camp, but make it hands-on 🌊🔬🌿

At Wild Islands Seaside Discovery, kids and youth will spend their days exploring the shoreline, investigating marine life, creating, experimenting, and getting hands-on with STEAM activities on the Eastern Shore.

Through outdoor adventures, marine science, environmental exploration, and creative projects, campers will build confidence, curiosity, and connection to the natural world, all while having a whole lot of fun outside.

We’re excited to be partnering with the Eastern Shore Ocean Discovery Centre to bring these experiences to life.

Flowing with nature at FlowEdge Riverside Getaway …🌲🚣🦌

We were very fortunate to spend some time with our friends at FlowEdge this week, exploring and relaxing in our own backyard.

Nestled on the edge of the Musquodoboit River, it felt easy to slip into a natural rhythm as we followed the trails along the river to a variety of breath-taking spaces and wild places, reconnecting with the busy hum of creatures great and small enjoying the beautiful spring weather.
