This is a longer post but some stories need to be shared.
We played Vaughn in the 2009 girls OPDL championship game. They had beaten us twice before — the first game in particular was rough. Not just for the team but for the GK.
A few goals went in that shouldn’t have. The mental toll that this takes is huge — it can create a crisis for an athlete.
I told Mya this is the best “worst” thing but it’s so valuable to your growth as a person and as an athlete. What it all comes down to though is how you choose to respond.
Let me tell you how Mya responded: She showed up to training sessions and we worked on the technical details that she wasn’t equipped with yet. Not only that, but it became an open conversation about how to train the mental game and level up — how do you respond on the field after a goal is scored on you? What are you communicating to your team? Are you able to stay dialled in?
She put the work in. Every training session, every piece of feedback, every detail, every tear, every moment of frustration drove Mya to find something deeper.
In this final game, there were saves made that were a direct result of her hard work and determination.
Whether you won or not, I’m so proud to bear witness to your growth. This is another step in your journey and I’m honoured to be a part of it.
