Hope everyone had a great summer, a great tryout season, and is ready to get back to training and kick off the hockey season!

Here’s a simple video showing that even the best players in the world focus on the basics. A common thought is, “I already know how to skate—why practice simple drills?” The answer is repetition and staying sharp. From U7 all the way to the NHL, every player benefits from practicing and sticking to the fundamentals.

Too often we try to overcomplicate things in an attempt to make them seem more valuable, but I believe focusing on the basics and getting more quality reps always wins.

The Kitscoty U9 Knights wrapped up their season this year. We had a busy year: 3 tournaments and 35 games. See you on the ice next season!

Thoughts of the day,

Do you want to become a better skater?

You have to truly want it. That means locking in on every rep, committing to every drill, and never taking shortcuts. Improvement comes from focused effort, not just going through the motions.

So ask yourself—are you just skating, or are you skating to get better?

What is power skating?

“Power skating” is often thrown around as some magic formula when, in reality, it’s just focused skating practice. Any time a player is working on their stride, edges, speed, and balance—whether in a structured drill or just during a shinny session—they’re doing power skating.

A dedicated “power skating” session just means isolating those elements with intentional drills, but it’s not some secret technique separate from regular skating. It’s just deliberate practice. Some coaches or programs try to sell it as something more exclusive than it really is.

My focus is teaching proper skating mechanics and providing the repetitions needed to become a more efficient skater.

I follow a four-step approach:

1. Efficiency – First, we learn the proper mechanics to build a strong foundation for efficient skating.
2. Power – Next, we develop explosiveness and balance to create a more powerful stride.
3. Speed – Then, we focus on increasing speed while maintaining proper form.
4. Game Application – Finally, we apply these skills in game-like situations, turning technique into performance. This is where “Hockey Performance skating” comes from.

Seems counterintuitive but it works. Sharing some things we will be working on in the coming week.

Dedicated player always looking for that extra 1%

Our player for Teammate Tuesday is

#8 Alexander Roy

Alex is another hard working forward who joins the team after playing most of his hockey in Kitscoty Ab. His pump up song is sure to get anyone fired up to play!
And it must have been a pretty great experience to sit on the bench for that Oilers game!

Have a great season with the u13 AAA Lancers
