Knot A Breast - Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team

Knot A Breast - Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team Dr. McKenzie was studying to test the myth that repetitive upper-body exercise in women treated for breast cancer encourages lymphedema.

History...
In the fall of 1995, a research project was being conducted by Dr. Don McKenzie, a Canadian 🇨🇦 Sports Medicine Physician and an Exercise Physiologist at the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. Lymphedema is a permanent, irreversible swelling of the arm and chest area that can develop any time after lymph node surgery and radiatio

n treatment. Dragon boating was chosen as the venue for several reasons:
• It is strenuous
• It is repetitive
• It requires upper body exercise
In February 1996, in Vancouver, BC the first breast cancer team in North America was formed calling themselves "Abreast In A Boat". 🇨🇦
Starting with a small group of survivors, our team was formed in April 1998. The dragon boat team made its first entrance on the water at Hamilton's Macassa Bay Yacht Club that spring and has not looked back! We thank Kathy Levy,
Founder and Head Coach, for bringing KNOT A BREAST together!!

The festival has finished, and it was all about uniting breast cancer survivors through dragon boating.
On the final day of events (last weekend) 174 teams participated in one big final event, 1000m race. This filled in for the 500m races that were canceled due to inclement weather.

KAB's final standings in the 1000m event for our two crews,
KAB #1 achieved a time of 5:11.54 & our second crew, KAB De Nouveau, had to stop paddling in their 1000m heat to avoid a collision, resulting in a time of 6:57.65.
Great job by both crews & our two steers-persons, who faced challenges on the water.
The IBCPC doesn’t keep official standings or rankings, nor does it have official winners or podium spots, everyone gets a medal. But many breast cancer teams are really competitive and work hard to win. But hey, in the grand scheme of things, all the BC paddlers are truly winners! 👏
