Knot A Breast - Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team

Knot A Breast - Breast Cancer Dragon Boat Team KAB OFFICIAL Board Approved page 2015 FOUNDED by KATHY LEVY 1998, a small group of 27 women survivors, created a floating support group.

Fostering camaraderie & understanding among its members. She continues to encourage & coach in our community. History...
In the fall of 1995, a research project was being conducted by Dr. Don McKenzie, a Canadian 🇨🇦 Sports Medicine Physician and an Exercise Physiologist at the Allan McGavin Sports Medicine Centre at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, B.C. Dr. McKenzie was studying to

test the myth that repetitive upper-body exercise in women treated for breast cancer encourages lymphedema. Lymphedema is a permanent, irreversible swelling of the arm and chest area that can develop any time after lymph node surgery and radiation treatment. Dragon boating was chosen as the venue for several reasons:
• It is strenuous
• It is repetitive
• It requires upper body exercise
In February 1996, in Vancouver, BC the first breast cancer team in North America was formed calling themselves "Abreast In A Boat". 🇨🇦
Starting with a small group of survivors, our team was formed in April 1998. The dragon boat team made its first entrance on the water at Hamilton's Macassa Bay Yacht Club that spring and has not looked back! We thank Kathy Levy,
Founder and Head Coach, for bringing KNOT A BREAST together!!

Good practice session for some of the early KAB crew training on Saturday morning. However, high winds and heavy whitecaps developed later, also known as a “ flock of sheep” forcing the cancellation of training for the second crew. 🐑🐏🐑🐏🐑🐏🐑

Last Sunday, May 24th, we kicked off our 2026 season at the Heart Lake, Toronto Women’s International Dragon Boat in Brampton, Ontario.
It was a fantastic spot to watch and participate in the 500 m, 200 m knockout rounds and the 2,000 m events, all under a cloudy sky and in cool weather. We also snapped a few team photos of KAB teams 1 and 2.

Sadly, KAB practice this morning (May 23) was called off due to not so nice weather. But here are some pictures from last Saturday’s practice at Bayfront Park.
Tomorrow KAB will be attending the Toronto Women's International Dragon Boat event at Heart Lake. It is the only all-women's festival, acting as a major kick-off for the racing season & a qualifier for the Cdn. National Championships (July 17-20th) being held in Montreal, Quebec. 🇨🇦

Remembrance Day - Nov. 11th 🇨🇦
We remember the courageous women and men who served, and those who continue to serve, to ensure our freedom.
On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month, it is tradition to hold a moment of silence in commemoration of the armistice agreement that ended the First World War on Monday, November 11, 1918, at 11 a.m.
Let us never forget.

This weekend...we fall back.
