I love running. I love the way it makes me feel, the way it can completely shift my mood, clear my mind, spark new ideas, and give me a different kind of energy. There’s something about it that feels freeing and grounding at the same time.
But because I love it, I also respect what it demands from you physically. To me, running puts a different kind of stress on the body than strength training. Both require proper fuel and recovery, but running has always felt more demanding.
The stress it places on the hips, knees, ankles, and feet adds up over time, which is why things like proper footwear, rotating shoes, recovery, mobility, hydration, and overall nourishment matter so much. Ignore those things long enough and injuries can creep in, and some take a long time to recover from fully.
Running also forces you to pay attention to the details: how you eat, when you eat, how much water and electrolytes you’re getting, joint and bone health, recovery, and especially sleep. Sleep might honestly be the most underrated performance tool of all. It affects everything from energy levels to recovery to how well your body handles the workload.
Whether you’re running for time, distance, or simply for yourself, a big part of the work happens before the run even starts. Love the sport, but train smart enough to keep your body with you for the long run.
