PORTUGAL BECAME EUROPEAN WHEELCHAIR HANDBALL CHAMPION:
A LESSON IN HUMANITY

On November 30th, Portugal was crowned European Champion in 4-a-side Wheelchair Handball.

It was the first-ever European Championship held in this format, which is currently a candidate sport for the 2032 Paralympic Games in Brisbane.

A victory in any sport in our country should always be seen as something extraordinary, as we are a nation with a small population, making the probability of being competitive much more complex.

However, the truth is that in recent times we have been achieving visible success in many sports. What is still missing is a culture that values these achievements. I accompanied this National Team every day in Lithuania and later on their return to Portugal. Although all the athletes are amateurs (receiving no financial compensation for practicing the sport), their attitude was (and is) impeccable. The way they commit and dedicate themselves to the sport is entirely professional. Even with all the inherent challenges—such as the check-in process for 10 people with severely reduced mobility, something that saddens anyone who sees it (and I did…)—their tolerance, understanding, and attitude make them true superheroes.

I know they were very happy to see their families and some people from the Portuguese Handball Federation waiting for them upon arrival. And I know they will never comment on this. They are genuinely remarkable people who, after everything they have been through in life, know how to focus on what truly matters. I’m sorry, but I cannot remain silent. How is it possible that we have a National Team that is European Champion—in how many areas or sectors are we the best in Europe??—and this achievement goes almost unnoticed? Why? What more could they have done? For me, even if they had finished 4th or 5th, it would still have been an extraordinary feat, because I know the difficulties they face. But becoming European Champions and having it seem irrelevant is something I cannot accept. If millionaire athletes (or close to it) from other clubs and national teams are celebrated as heroes, why don’t these athletes deserve the same?

The truth is, they taught me a profound lesson through all of this: they focus on what truly matters—the team, the family, the friends, and the country—because that is what they can control. The “rest,” in fact, is up to all of us to value. That is what moved me to write “for them.”

I know they would never ask me to do this, but I felt an “obligation” to do it for them.

Thank you, team. I am incredibly proud that Portugal is the European Champion in Wheelchair Handball. We are a fantastic country, and you helped make it even better. At the arena, I saw how other countries looked at you with pride. I will never forget that, because the feeling was—and still is—mutual.
