Isabella Miller: The Fearless Canadian Cowgirl Who Helped Change Barrel Racing Forever 🐎🇨🇦

Some cowgirls chase championships. Others help build a legacy that lasts for generations. Isabella Miller was one of those extraordinary women who did both.

Born Pearl Isabella Hamilton on January 28, 1941, in Alberta, Canada, Isabella grew up surrounded by horses, ranch life, and the Western traditions that would shape her future. Her father was a bull riding champion in the 1920s and a chuckwagon driver, so rodeo was already part of her family’s story. Isabella began learning to ride horses when she was just two years old. While other children were still discovering the world, she was already finding her freedom in the saddle.

But Isabella’s story was about much more than riding horses. She wanted women to have a real place in the rodeo arena.

In 1957, she became one of the founders of the Canadian Girls’ Barrel Racing Association. At a time when women were fighting for greater opportunities in rodeo, Isabella helped lead the movement. The association worked to open doors for female competitors at major events, including the legendary Calgary Stampede. Beginning in 1958, women gained the right to compete there in barrel racing.

That was more than a victory for one organization. It was a breakthrough for generations of cowgirls who would follow.

In 1960, Isabella captured the Canadian barrel racing championship. What made that achievement especially meaningful was that she had owned, trained, and ridden her own horse. She understood that success in the arena came from patience, preparation, determination, and the bond between horse and rider.

Around 1962, she married and began competing under the name Isabella Miller. Her success continued, and she proved that her talent reached far beyond a single event. She won the Canadian women's All-Around title five times, in 1963, 1966, 1967, 1968, and 1969. In 1963, the Calgary Sports Women's Association also named her Calgary's Athlete of the Year.

Then came a heartbreaking challenge.

During the 1969 season, Isabella was involved in a vehicle accident that claimed the life of her horse. For a horsewoman, losing a trusted partner is a pain that goes far beyond competition. Yet Isabella refused to let tragedy define her career. That same year, she won the Canadian barrel racing championship again, showing the determination that had carried her through years of hard work.

Life outside the arena demanded just as much courage. Isabella raised three children, Tyler, Bobbie June, and Billie Ruth, as a single mother. To support her family, she drove a school bus for 15 years. Because rodeo offered little financial security, she also raised and trained horses and worked as a stunt rider in films.

Think about that for a moment. She was a champion, a mother, a horse trainer, and a working woman who kept moving forward even when life was difficult.

And she never truly left the arena. Isabella continued competing into her 60s, often ranking among Canada's top ten women in barrel racing. She also returned to leadership, serving another term as president of the barrel racing association from 1981 to 1986.

In 2002, she married fellow rodeo champion Arnold Haraga. Three years later, in 2005, Isabella received one of the sport's highest honors when she was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame.
She passed away on January 26, 2007, just two days before her 66th birthday. But her legacy lives on in the history of Canadian rodeo and in every cowgirl who has been given the opportunity to compete because women like Isabella refused to give up.

Isabella Miller was not simply a champion who won titles. She was a pioneer who helped open the arena, a mother who worked tirelessly for her family, and a cowgirl whose courage carried her through both triumph and heartbreak.

**Her story reminds us that true greatness is not measured only by the championships we win, but by the doors we open for those who come after us.**

🐎 **Let's honor Isabella Miller, a Canadian rodeo pioneer whose name deserves to be remembered.**

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Olive Hayne, a Life Member of the Canadian Girls Rodeo Association.

Olive was a true cowgirl who spent many years travelling the rodeo circuit, competing in roping, goat tying and steer undecorating. Her accomplishments in the arena included CGRA Steer Undecorating Champion in 1983 and 1993, as well as being named CGRA Cowgirl of the Year in 1977 and 1978.

Beyond her accomplishments in the arena, Olive was someone who was always willing to lend a hand and give back to the association she was a part of for so many years. Her dedication, competitive spirit and love of the rodeo life left a lasting mark on the CGRA.

We extend our deepest condolences to Olive’s family, friends and all those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Rest easy, Olive. Your place in the CGRA family and your legacy in women’s rodeo will not be forgotten. 🤍

The full obituary and service information can be found through Heartland Funeral Services.
