Places to play have impacts beyond sport. Research from the Measuring the Impact of Sport, Physical Activity and Recreation in Canada demonstrates that sport and recreation infrastructure is therefore connected not only to participation, but also to broader physical and mental health outcomes. Calgary is an active city. The time to invest in sport and recreation infrastructure is now.

Calgarians continue to drive to other cities to participate in tournaments. Incremental sport infrastructure will allow Calgary to grow the number of national and international events hosted in Calgary that drive visitation, economic impact, and contribute to vibrant communities while also providing local sport and recreation enthusiasts an opportunity to live healthy, more active lifestyles, right here in the city we love. Let’s invest in more places to play — keeping Calgarians playing here and giving more people a reason to come play here, too.

Lack of indoor places to play in the winter for all sports, ice sports overbooked to the brim, full gymnasiums programs mean kids and people of all ages … can’t play. Lack of pools means kids are not learning to swim, and more. Calgary’s sport system is at capacity and thousands of people who want to play are being left without a place to participate. When there isn’t a place to play, there isn’t access to sport. Across Calgary, the story is being repeated across sports: thousands of young people want to participate, but existing facilities limits how many can. More places to play means more opportunities to participate.

TBT: It poured at our first session, and for one kid, that was a dream come true. 🏈

This summer, kids aged 6 to 14 who'd never played football learned the game from real Calgary Stampeders players. Everyone who made all three sessions earned two tickets to watch their new coaches play on Aug 29.

"This was the most fun camp ever, and I can't wait to play again next year!" — Flag football camper

Thank you to the Calgary Stampeders for showing up for these kids, and to Boston Pizza Market Mall and Beddington for donating the pizzas for our final-session pizza party, plus the vouchers our families took home.

Want to keep them playing? Message us "FLAG" and we'll connect you with a flag football program near you.

As Calgary grows, access to recreation depends on having enough capacity and facilities distributed across the city. When recreation space is limited, the result is full programs, crowded facilities, waitlists, and lost opportunities to participate. Where facilities are located - and whether there is room when people get there - matters. Access to places to play, move, and connect is part of what makes a city livable. A growing city isn’t just about where people live - it’s about how they live. Places to play, move, and connect are part of what makes Calgary a livable city.

If your kid's practice starts at 6 AM because that's the only time slot left, this one's for you.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in Marda Loop yesterday and on today's webinar. If you missed it, here's the part of GamePLAN worth knowing 👇

In 2025, Council had three options for the future of recreation in Calgary: Going Under. Staying Afloat. Making Waves.

They chose Making Waves. According to The City, that means:
• Up to 40% more swim lessons per Calgarian
• 25% more bookable hours at ice rinks
• 2.5x more bookable hours on indoor fields and athletic parks

The plan is approved. The funding isn't. Council starts debating the 2027–2030 budget on Nov. 23.

Without investing in sport and recreation infrastructure – the community sport system will become inaccessible. Lack of sport and recreation infrastructure in a growing city means we are turning away thousands of Calgarians from sport and recreation opportunities. A waitlist only captures people who actually make it onto one. Across Calgary’s sport system, organizations report closing registration when programs reach capacity, limiting participation based on available facility time, and stifled program growth. The result is an invisible waitlist of Calgarians who want to participate but aren't reflected in traditional waitlist numbers.

Without continued investment in sport and recreation infrastructure, Calgary’s community sport system will become increasingly inaccessible - and for many, it already is. And that number doesn’t capture everyone who wants to play. Closed registrations, program caps, and untracked waitlists mean significant additional demand remains invisible. The demand for community sport in Calgary is real. The challenge is having enough places for people to participate.

Accessible sport and recreation infrastructure isn't a niche need - it matters to hundreds of thousands of Calgarians. Renewal is not just replacing old buildings. It is an opportunity to build facilities that work better for people with varying needs and abilities. Accessibility is a critical component of planning for Calgary’s recreation future.

More accessible places to play mean more opportunities for everyone to participate, belong, and play.
