🐴 Pepper’s Official Statement on His Diet 🐴
Pepper would like everyone to know that he believes his current dietary restrictions are unfair, unreasonable, and possibly a violation of his constitutional rights. 😂
According to Pepper, the fact that other horses get things he doesn’t is a personal attack. The fact that his hay is weighed is offensive. And the fact that his humans won’t let him gorge himself on grass is proof that nobody loves him.
Unfortunately for Pepper, he is insulin resistant, which means his body doesn’t respond to insulin properly. When insulin levels remain elevated, it can significantly increase the risk of laminitis—a painful and potentially devastating condition affecting the feet.
So while Pepper believes he should be allowed unlimited snacks, grass buffets, and a second breakfast, his humans disagree. 🤦♀️
The good news is that we are actively working with our amazing veterinarian at Wise Equine to get his insulin levels under control and help him become healthier and more comfortable.
For horses and ponies with insulin resistance, management is incredibly important and typically includes:
✅ Low sugar (low NSC) forage
✅ Controlled calorie intake when weight loss is needed
✅ Limited or carefully managed pasture access
✅ Regular exercise when appropriate
✅ Monitoring body condition and metabolic health
The goal isn’t to starve them—it’s actually the opposite. The goal is to provide the right nutrition while avoiding the sugars and starches that can trigger metabolic problems and increase the risk of laminitis.
Pepper remains unconvinced.
He would like everyone to know that he is currently being subjected to what he describes as “extreme hardship” and “cruel hay rationing.”
We would like everyone to know that Pepper is, in fact, well-fed, well-loved, and simply dramatic. 💀😂
Thank you to the team at Wise Equine for helping us keep this handsome little potato healthy while he continues his campaign for unlimited snacks.
