Introducing Councillor Steven vanNieuwkerk.

Steven vanNieuwkerk was born in Bashaw and was raised in the central Alberta towns of Mirror and Stettler. Steven and his wife have two sons and have called Beaumont home since 2011.

Steven’s background, following university, includes eight years of business ownership and staff management during a 24-year career in environmental consulting. Currently, he provides both environmental and business management services to companies within our region.

Reflecting on his time as a business owner in Alberta, Steven is a supporter of process, procedure and has a strong understanding of issues before looking to create solutions. Steven believes in “the right people, working on the right tasks.”

Steven can be found, year-round, at various great events put on in Beaumont, and, on our vibrant trail system with his family. In his spare time, Steven enjoys spending time with his family and friends on the golf course, on camping trips and taking his boys to and from the various extracurricular activities they are involved in.

Introducing Councillor Philip Penrod.

Philip is committed to community service and has worked wherever he has lived to develop and sustain neighbourhoods that are nurturing, inclusive, and diverse. His experience includes frontline service with youth-at-risk, elder-care, environmental and anti-poverty initiatives as well as various planning committees and governing boards of both faith-based and secular organizations.

Raised in small-town Alberta (Strathmore), Philip was thrilled to return to that familiar feel upon settling in Beaumont (2011) after years spent pursuing various learning opportunities. He completed a Bachelor of Arts at Augustana Faculty. His education has also included stops in Edmonton, Moncton, Winnipeg and Saskatoon – where he received his Master of Divinity in 2011.

Philip is grateful to the countless communities that have nurtured and guided his growth as a servant leader. He believes good government strikes a dynamic balance between inspired leadership and meaningful consultation with all stakeholders in a way that prioritizes generational sustainability.

Since 2021, Philip has embraced the role of stay-at-home dad to Zephyra, Josiah and Solomon in support of his partner, Tessa, and her role as a local family-physician. Whether you see him at the Community Centre or, a local pub; in the park or at the library, Philip hopes you will take the time to say hello and share what is on your heart.

Introducing Councillor Nathan Netelenbos.

Nathan Netelenbos has proudly served as a Beaumont City Councillor since 2023, bringing a wealth of leadership experience and a strong commitment to community development. A resident of Beaumont since 2015, Nathan’s career spans law enforcement, health, safety & security, and environmental protection, where he held senior leadership roles and championed initiatives that prioritize putting people first.

Nathan’s academic background in biological sciences and occupational health & safety reflects his dedication to lifelong learning and evidence-based decision-making. As a certified Canadian Registered Safety Professional (CRSP), he continues to apply his expertise in governance and corporate leadership, ensuring policies that foster safety, sustainability, and smart growth.

Beyond council chambers, Nathan is deeply involved in Beaumont’s sports communities, volunteering as a coach and mentor and serving on executive boards to support youth programs. His commitment to civic engagement is matched by his devotion to family life as a husband and father of two, embodying the balance between professional service and personal values.

Introducing Councillor Kim Murray.

Born and raised in Alberta, Kim spent the bulk of her childhood in the Edmonton area, finally settling in St. Albert, Alberta. She graduated with a bilingual diploma in 1992 and attended Grant MacEwan in 1996 in Environmental Sciences before realizing that wholistic studies was her passion. During her late 20s, Kim attended a wholistic nutrition college in Sherwood Park where she achieved her reflexology and reiki certifications.

She met her husband Brad in 2003 and shortly thereafter graduated as a Registered Massage Therapist in 2004. She continued in this field for 21 years.

Her husband’s career as an air traffic controller brought them to Dieppe, New Brunswick for nine years. It was there that their three children, Emily, Lily and Jet were born. While in New Brunswick, Kim worked for a local clinic providing massage therapy and for a time with WestJet as a customer service agent. Eventually, work brought them back to Alberta and Kim transitioned from part-time massage therapy to full-time, eventually opening her own clinic from 2016 to 2018. Since then, Kim worked as a contractor within a local clinic and retired in the fall of 2025 to fully pursue the role of Councillor.

Achievements

Started a successful massage therapy clinic with $250,000 in sales in the first full year of operations.
Successfully represented herself in a civil claim in Alberta (2020)
Collaborated writing a petition statement and petitioned against Bill 10 (2020)
Arranged to have an opposition member present a petition to the Alberta Legislature (2020)
Wrote a petition statement and petitioned Black Gold School Division (2022)
Collaborated in writing a series of open letters to the Government of Alberta (2020)
Kim is dedicated to keeping Beaumont a safe and connected community as well as keeping true to its small-town charm.

Introducing Councillor Anthony Kholsmith.

Anthony’s connection to the community goes back to the late ‘90s when he attended High School in the French Immersion program here in Beaumont.

After living in Edmonton, establishing careers, and starting a family, Anthony and his wife Margorie made the choice to move to Beaumont in 2016 to raise their two children. They were drawn by their connection to the community and its small-town feel.

Anthony has an Instrumentation Engineering Technology diploma from NAIT and is a Journeyman Instrumentation Technician. He has worked throughout the province in the energy sector for over 20 years with the last 13 years in managerial positions. He has held key roles in operations asset management, enterprise application deployments and infrastructure and technology projects.
