It could be. Here's how...

Ever have one of those days where you do an AMAZING warm-up… then somehow feel weaker when you actually start lifting?

And another day you barely warm up at all and everything feels great?

We’re definitely not suggesting you skip your warm-up 😂 but there’s a point here:

A longer warm-up isn’t always better.

A good warm-up should prepare you to train, not tire you out before you get there.

Think of it in two parts.

First, get warm and get moving.

Spend 5–10 minutes increasing your body temperature, moving your joints and addressing anything that feels stiff or restricted.

And make it specific to YOU.

Tight hamstrings? Give them some attention.
Stiff shoulders? Work on those.

Then comes your lifting-specific warm-up.

This is where we see people accidentally turn their warm-up into a workout.

Too many reps.
Or too much weight.
Resulting in too much wasted energy.

For example, before a bench press working set:

5 reps @ ~50%
3 reps @ ~70%
1–2 reps @ ~80%

Thats all you need to prepare your muscles and joints and nervous system and to practice the movement pattern with tiring yourself out. Then get to work.

And you don’t need to start the whole process over before every exercise. Once you’re warm, a quick acclimation set or two may be all you need when switching to a new movement pattern.

Get warm.
Move well.
Address what YOUR body needs.
Practise the lift.
Introduce the load.

Then save your energy for the sets that actually count.

Now go crush a new PR. 💪

We’re excited to be opening our doors to local youth for a special Gym Discovery Session in partnership with the Mississippi Mills Youth Centre! 💪

At AFC, we believe confidence in the gym starts with learning, encouragement and a positive first experience. We’re proud to create opportunities like this for young people in our community and help introduce the next generation to fitness in a safe, welcoming environment.

We can’t wait to have them in the gym! ❤️

Have you ever been curious about working out? You're not alone!

Join us at the Almonte Fitness Centre on Saturday, September 19th from 10:30am-12pm for a Gym Discovery Session! You'll get a tour of the gym, learn about the equipment and participate in a workout!
