⛳️ A little disruption now = better golf ahead. 🌱
Right now, the Balam Golf team is aerifying the entire course, including greens, tees, fairways, and rough.
Since opening our course in March, our turf has seen months of play, equipment traffic, tropical rain, heat, and plenty of growth. Aerification is an important part of building a healthy, resilient golf course, especially while the turf is actively growing and able to recover quickly.
So what does aerification actually do? 👇
🌱 Relieves soil compaction
💨 Gets oxygen down into the root zone
💧 Improves water movement and drainage
🌿 Encourages deeper, stronger roots
🧪 Helps nutrients reach the turf more effectively
⛳️ Creates healthier playing surfaces for the months ahead
And at Balam, we use a few different tools to get the job done.
GREENS: Normally, our Ryan Greensaire 24 handles the putting surfaces. It’s currently out of commission, and getting turf-specific parts into Belize can sometimes take a while… so our team got creative. 😎
We built our own aerifying tamper fitted with multiple small hollow tines, allowing us to carefully pull cores from the greens while we wait for parts. Sometimes golf course management in Belize requires a little engineering along with the agronomy!
FAIRWAYS: Our Verti-Drain tow-behind aerifier goes deeper, pulling cores approximately 3–5 inches to relieve compaction and open up the soil profile.
ROUGH + SELECT TEES: A rolling pull-behind aerifier helps us cover the larger areas efficiently and make sure the benefits of aerification extend well beyond the greens.
Using all three methods allows our team to work across the entire golf course, improving soil health from tee to green.
The course might look a little different while the work is happening, but underneath the surface, we’re building something better. 🌱
