Okavango bream

28/07/2026

It's been 10 years since I first started competing in the Okavango Bream Classic. Missed 2019 then there was no Classic during the COVID years. Only came back in 2023, missed '24, '25 then made a comeback in 2026.

Just reflecting today how this comp has become the annual mid-year break and boys outing. The camping is an essential ingredient, pity it was my first time not staying at SRL this year. But please believe 2027 will be under the stars, next to the river as usual. As long as they fix the road, I'll even come back with my boat this time.

Waking up to the all too familiar 5am "rise and shine, it's competition time" belted out across sleepy campsites. It's been a wild ride filled with friendships, camaraderie and adventure!!

OBC Goodie Bag 2026 😍

Day 2 boat issues, had to call in for help at base camp. Fortunately, Drotsky's Cabins stepped in to help after recovering us off the water drifting with no control. They tied us up on the dock and tried to help. After failing to start, they towed us all the way back to SRL. True gentlemen! We later discovered it was a blown fuse - fortunately the boat mechanic had packed a spare and we were able to head off again on Day 3.

Boat launch with Kyle at Samochima Fisheries, next door to Shakawe River Lodge. This was the boat test to make sure we're shipshape for comp next day. Big thanks to Henry Tshepo Segopa for loaning a sturdy Aliboat and Kyle Ryan for always being my backup every comp! Adjusted the motor perfectly to get it performing optimally.

The Lone KingFisher, skipper on our little 85hp Yammie powered Aliboat. This thing was flying - really impressed me how this motor did. Couldn't go full throttle because we would have been airborne!!

OBC 2026 was insane!! We caught a bunch of fish on Day 1 that ended up being disqualified because we didn't do a continuous shoot from recording on the length mat to release. Day 2 we caught well again having discovered a hole filled with pink happies.

My first mate Lord Blankington was on fire with the thinfaces and humpbacks , catching consistently for 2 days in a row. We didn't catch any proper monsters but it was an amazing trip nonetheless! Day 3 we didn't make it back to base camp on time for the buzzer and got a zero tag in as a result. We ended up 31st out of 35 including a blown fuse on the motor that cut our Day 2 in half.

All worth it in the end as we went out again after comp was over for our own fishing and caught more fish in an hour than for the whole comp itself! Great fun and will be back next year. Special tribute to the late great Rod Bateman and the Okavango Bream Classic Organising Committee for an amazing and well organized event.
