🥋🤝 Familiar face today at Zero Point GJJ Gent!

Today we had the pleasure of having from Quicksand BJJ on our mats. It's always great to reconnect with training partners and friends from the grappling community.

Different styles, good exchanges, tough rounds, and plenty of smiles along the way. Sessions like these remind us how strong and welcoming the Jiu-Jitsu community can be.

Thanks for dropping by, Jeroen. We appreciate the visit and hope to see you back soon! 🙏

Training experiment today at Zero Point GJJ Gent🥋👕

Today we switched things up and trained in regular street T-shirts instead of our usual gear. The goal was to explore how clothing can affect grips, control, and choke opportunities in realistic situations.

It quickly became clear that everyday clothing can become a powerful tool—although some T-shirts didn't survive the session 😅. A few torn collars and stretched seams were the price of learning!

Great atmosphere, lots of laughs, and some interesting technical insights along the way. Swipe through for examples of the different positions we worked on.

🥋 Why we train from standing 🥋

In sport BJJ, it's common to see athletes pull guard and voluntarily sit down to bring the fight to the ground. While that can be an effective strategy in competition, it's not something you would typically want to do in a self-defense situation.

That's why we spend time training takedowns, clinch work, and off-balancing techniques. The goal is to safely take your opponent to the ground while maintaining control and staying in a dominant position.

Self-defense doesn't start on the ground—it starts standing. 👊

🔥 Awesome energy at our recent Self-Defense Workshop at work! 🔥

What a great session! We had 20 participants join us, and the energy in the room was amazing from start to finish 🙌

We covered the difference between martial arts as a sport vs real-life self-defense, then worked on important fundamentals like:
✔️ Connection
✔️ Distance management
✔️ Strong base & posture
✔️ Angles & positioning
✔️ Weight distribution
✔️ Guard and surrounding awareness

We then applied these ideas through practical drills and scenarios:
▪️ Technical stand-up
▪️ Wall choke defense
▪️ Haymaker defense
▪️ Neck grab escapes

⚔️ We even touched briefly on weapon situations — with one clear message: if you can run, RUN. But we also showed a few key concepts for worst-case scenarios when escape isn’t possible.

Huge respect to everyone who stepped out of their comfort zone, trained hard, and made the session such a fun and empowering experience 🙌

Half Guard… wait, what?

This week we spent time working from half guard — not exactly our go-to position. After all, why would you choose to let someone pass half your guard? 🤔

But that’s exactly the point.

Half guard often happens whether you like it or not. It’s an intermediate position — a place where things can go wrong fast if you don’t know what you’re doing. Ignore it, and you risk getting stuck in side control. Understand it, and it becomes a moment to recover, control, and work your way back to a stronger position. 👊

We focus on staying safe, creating frames, and building back toward dominant positions. No panic — just smart, technical work.

That’s how we train: not just ideal scenarios, but real ones.

👊 All levels welcome

No-Gi Season - Strong Start 💯

We’re already two weeks into our No-Gi season and the mats have been on fire 🔥

This morning’s training hit all the marks — strong attendance, focused work, high tempo, and great energy on the mats. 👊

Last week also brought a special moment:
Tairan officially received his well-earned stripe. He missed his promotion during Gi season due to injury, but we made it right. Respect for the patience and comeback mindset. 💪

We keep building. Keep showing up. Keep growing.

🔥 That’s a wrap on Gi Season 🔥

Today we closed out our final Gi class of the season — and what a way to finish.

This Gi season has been all about consistency, growth, and showing up week after week. We’re proud to celebrate a special milestone at Zero Point GJJ Gent: our very first promotions. 👊

A big congratulations to the following athletes who earned their first stripe on white belt:
Boris, Cedric, Eagle, Niels, Thomas, Ziad, William.

Your hard work, discipline, and attitude on the mats truly paid off. This is just the beginning. 💪

We also want to mention that one of our dedicated teammates couldn’t be there due to injury — but don’t worry, your stripe is waiting for you when you’re back on the mats. 👊

Now… we switch gears.

👀 No-Gi season starts this Thursday and runs through the end of October. Expect a faster pace, new challenges, and a different kind of grind.

🔥 No time to post… too busy training 🔥

We’ve been on the mats week in, week out — drilling, rolling, improving — just didn’t have time to show it.

Our BJJ & GJJ classes have been going strong, with great energy and solid progress from everyone on the mats. 💪

Now we’re heading into the second-to-last week of gi season…
👀 No-Gi season is coming up fast.

Time to switch gears and get ready for a different kind of grind.
