In an age dominated by T20 leagues, the longest format faces some serious challenges. But is its future as bleak as some predict?
Based on the ICC's Future Tours Programme, we'll see nine teams playing in the World Test Championship cycle over the next few years (2025-2027), which is a positive sign. However, the schedule is heavily weighted towards the "Big Three" of India, Australia, and England, who are playing more Tests than others. We need to ensure that Test cricket remains a viable option for all full members.
So, what should the ICC do to keep the game's soul alive?
* Financial Support: The ICC is reportedly considering a multi-million dollar fund to support smaller nations and ensure Test players are compensated fairly, so they don't opt for the more lucrative T20 leagues. This is a crucial step!
* Flexible Formats: We've seen reports that the ICC is looking at sanctioning four-day Tests for smaller nations in the next WTC cycle (2027-2029) to address scheduling and cost concerns. While five-day Tests are the gold standard, this could be a pragmatic way to increase participation and ensure more series take place.
* Tiered System: A two or three-tier Test structure could create more competitive matches and provide a clearer pathway for new teams to rise through the ranks. This would add context and excitement to every game.
* Emphasize Rivalries: The World Test Championship has already added meaning to every series. The ICC should continue to build on this, promoting historic rivalries like The Ashes and the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, which consistently draw massive crowds and viewership.

Let's learn how the game of Cricket is played.

Cricket is popular in many countries, mostly in Commonwealth countries.

The countries where cricket is most popular compete in international matches (games between countries). Those countries are England, Australia, West Indies, South Africa, New Zealand, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Ireland, Afghanistan and Sri Lanka. The West Indies are a group of Caribbean countries that play together as a team. Several other countries have more junior status. The test match idea was invented by teams from England and Australia in the 19th century. Ireland and Afghanistan are the new teams which can play Test cricket.

Cricket is also played in Kenya, Canada, Bermuda, Scotland, Holland and Namibia; USA the national teams of those countries can play one-day international matches, but do not play test matches.
