I’m a landscape painting.
These are from the series My Loves on the Black Soil
Created during a period of profound change in my life as a woman a mother a human being. My Loves on the Black Soil emerged after my daughters left home and relocated to the Kimberley region of Western Australia. In the absence created by distance, our relationship began to exist through fragments, photographs of skies, country, floodwaters, smoke, fire scars and vast horizons sent across thousands of kilometres.
These images became more than documentation of place. They carried stories of heartbreak, danger, wonder, loneliness, adventure and survival within elemental landscapes that remain largely indifferent to human presence.
I think of these works as landscapes, though not in the traditional sense. They are emotional and geological terrains simultaneously places where memory, weather, motherhood and distance collapse into one another. The paintings operate as atmospheric records of transition; spaces suspended between presence and disappearance.
The term ossiferous landscape, environments rich with preserved remains and traces of deep time became an important conceptual anchor for this work. Much like fossil-bearing country, these paintings hold residue: evidence of what once lived closely together. Smoke plumes, voids, shifting horizons and sedimented surfaces become metaphors for attachment, separation and the enduring material weight of love.
All these works exists within this tension between vastness and intimacy - a landscape carrying both exposure and shelter, absence and permanence.
Thankyou for reading all the way.
