The Kimura (ude-garami) is a figure-four shoulder lock that primarily attacks the shoulder joint, while also placing significant pressure on the elbow if the defender resists. It’s one of the highest-percentage submissions in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu because it’s effective from many positions.

The technique became famous after the 1951 match where Japanese judoka Masahiko Kimura defeated Hélio Gracie using this shoulder lock. Although the technique existed long before, the BJJ community named it “Kimura” after that match.
