Equine sports massage is more than simply helping your horse relax.

The aim is to work with the horse's muscles and soft tissues to support normal muscle function, movement and recovery.

It may help to
โ€ข Reduce muscle tension and stiffness
โ€ข Maintain flexibility and range of movement
โ€ข Support recovery following exercise and competition
โ€ข Identify areas of tension, sensitivity or changes in muscle tone
โ€ข Support your horse's comfort and overall wellbeing

Massage is one part of a bigger picture. Training, fitness, nutrition, dental care, saddle fit and appropriate veterinary care all play an important role in keeping a horse performing at their best.

Sports massage can be a useful part of a horse's ongoing performance and wellbeing program.

Every horse is different, so treatments are tailored to the individual horse, their workload and their needs.

The truth is thereโ€™s no one-size-fits-all answer. Every horseโ€™s mouth is different, and each horse has their own preference when it comes to tongue and bar pressure.

During a bit fitting, Iโ€™ll assess your horseโ€™s mouth conformation, including their tongue size, bars and cheeks. Iโ€™ll also check how your current bit and bridle fit.

The next step is watching you ride in your current bit so I can see how your horse is going and look for any signs of discomfort or resistance.

From there, Iโ€™ll recommend a few suitable bits for you to try during the appointment, based on your horseโ€™s individual needs.

Does your horse have a foamy mouth?

Salivation is a natural response when a horse has a bit in their mouth. Saliva lubricates the mouth, helps prevent the tissues from becoming dry and uncomfortable, and allows the bit to move more comfortably.

But there is a difference between normal salivation and excessive foaming.

๐Ÿšฉ A very wet, excessively foamy mouth may indicate:
โ€ข Too much pressure on the tongue
โ€ข The horse struggling to swallow comfortably
โ€ข The bit not allowing enough room for the tongue
โ€ข Excessive movement or instability of the bit
โ€ข Tension or discomfort in the mouth

Every horse is different, and the amount of salivation can vary โ€” so itโ€™s important to look at the whole picture, including your horseโ€™s behavior, mouth, contact and response to the bit.

If your horse is showing signs of discomfort, a professional bit fit can help determine whether the bit is suitable and comfortable for your horse. ๐ŸŽ

๐Ÿ‘‡ Top Tip Thursday!
Do you use Leather, sweet iron or barrel bits? Does your bit squeak?
Oil them!

Vegetable oil or olive oil conditions them nicely. Stops wear, cracking, rough patches even squeaking!
