This is Matsubayashi ryu Australian student (Taree dojo) Kathleen Rees, receiving her shodan certificate issued by the World Matsubayashi ryu Karate Association . This is the culmination of 22 years of dedicated, hard, consistent training by Kathleen to attain her long cherished dream of earning this rank. In all those long years of training, Kathleen only missed class training due to genuine illness and was the most consistent student over this long period of time. Congratulations Kathleen on your promotion. Very well done.

Day 3 – Final Day of Training in NSW

It has been a pleasure to host Arakaki Sensei for three days of seminars filled with great knowledge, good spirit, and—as Sensei described it—‘a good harvest’.

The final session focused on Kihon, Pinan Shodan, and Naihanchi Nidan, before Yudansha (black belts) worked on Gojushiho and other groups explored a range of kata. We concluded by revisiting Yakusoku Kumite, combining sequences with minimal pauses, increased speed, and higher intensity.

Sensei also guided students through Kihon Bo and Shirotaro no Kon, while Carlyle Sensei led instruction on Shiromatsu no Kon—a fitting end to a productive and inspiring NSW leg of the tour. We wrapped up the evening with an informal social event over pizza and drinks, before training continues tomorrow evening in Canberra.

Thank you to all the MKAA members, supporters, and people who attended training and assisted with making the seminars possible.
